Lily stepped back from the situation with a frustrated sigh, her hands flying up to cross over her chest as she used the extra distance to further analyse what could be done.
The cave-in in front of her led to a passage she hadn’t yet explored, and she’d been trying for the last half hour to clear the rocks so that she could make her way through. But try as she might, it was impossible to remove them by herself. The rocks at the top needed to be taken first to avoid a landslide and another cave-in, but she couldn’t climb the rocks and hold her lantern at the same time, and setting the lantern down provided no light at the top of the cave, where she needed it most in order to see which rocks were loose enough to be removed. It was a two-person job, and unfortunately, Lily usually worked alone.
But as if in answer to her unintentional prayer, she heard footsteps heading towards her. The Leuda Mines were so large with so many tunnels heading in different directions that it was rare to meet somebody else by accident down here. So she seized the opportunity for help, calling out, “Excuse me?”
