“People see great piano performances and think to themselves, "Gee, I'd love to be able to do that. I want to learn to play the piano too." Little do they realize what it took to achieve the level of skill they just heard. Little do they realize that the piano is not a four-stringed ukulele that they can just start strumming and be able to play a song by this afternoon. Little do they realize they cannot make a chord by putting one finger on a string and just start strumming. Little do they realize what kind of effort it takes to become proficient at reading sheet music. Little do they realize that they must train all ten fingers to have equal dexterity and what a coordination challenge it is to make both of their hands operate out of unison and independently with one another. Little do they realize that they will have to practice scales going up and down the keyboard tens of thousands of times in order to achieve the dexterity and finger control required to play music smoothly and beautifully. Little do they realize they'll have to take years of 'baby steps' before they'll be able to play complex rhythms and key signatures (or what the heck a key signature is in the first place). I could go on for pages about the other things they don't realize.”
