On this day in 1862, the furthest west Civil War battle happened in Arizona 🌵🇺🇸

April 15 marks the anniversary of the Battle of Picacho Pass, a little-known Civil War skirmish that took place in the Sonoran Desert between present-day Phoenix and Tucson.

Union cavalry troops were scouting the area when they unexpectedly came across a small group of Confederate soldiers near Picacho Peak. What followed was a brief but intense clash in the desert, involving fewer than 20 soldiers in total.

Even though the battle was small, it turned deadly — with casualties on both sides — and went down as the furthest west engagement of the entire Civil War.

At the time, Confederate forces were attempting to expand west through the Arizona Territory to gain control of key travel routes and strengthen their presence in the region. Encounters like this helped slow that push and kept Union forces in control of the area.

Today, a stone monument still stands at Picacho Peak State Park, marking where the battle took place over 160 years ago — something thousands of drivers pass every year without realizing the history behind it.

It’s one of those hidden Arizona stories that most people never hear about.

Superbloom - March 2023. I have been talking about the drought in many of my recent posts. Back in 2023, there was drought, but the summer monsoons had left a lot of water on the land. And then in late February and early March there were abundant rains which triggered a superbloom of all of the desert wildflowers.
