The Pic-O-De Crop Competition was quite interesting. It may have even been a PELAU cause some of evating get pelt in the mix! We didn’t seem to have the mega fanfare with the restriction of props and dancers on stage but those with a creative team worked around the limitations. I Felt that most of the presentations were simple and effective. John Yarde’s Rendition of “I will remember you” was flawless and as a first timer he should be proud. Colin Spencer went full Mafia mode pon de people stage. Amara sounded like a female version of Spencer - good phrasing & rendition but boring performance. I really liked the twist to Doyenne’s “Love Affair” it was well penned and her vocal rendition was very good. Quon lick up de place with “Aminal Kingdom.” He has a bright future in calypso. Sammy was in fine form- she has improved tremendously and is coming into her own. Ranaan reminds me of his dad Cockroach he handled himself well and with time will be a force to be reckoned with. TC’s “Kaiso Reporter” was lyrically was one of the strongest of the night. Donella SANGGGG & was pure class as usual. De Annoncer had a D for everybody! Crystal’s ‘Crazy” probably went over a few heads but I loved it. Classic fought to retain his crown but I don’t think anyone will be able to defeat IWeb. The sound system in my humble opinion was HORRIBLE. Many of the Calypsonians seemed to be struggling to hear, the microphone was often muzzled and it was like the sound man fell asleep after every performance cause at the beginning of most of the artist’s performances the mic levels were almost inaudible then wham the levels turned up but guest what the mic still sounded muffled! Not sure who will win but Water Street Boys will take home the largest share of the winnings having written for many of the finalists. Note to song writers - topics must be developed, there were too many cliche approaches to topics which left songs lyrically weak. Some of the musical arrangements also needed refining.
