The requests were for porcelains but I do have a bird-inspired gem, Pigeonite, who is not as cool.

That's a bearded vulture by the way, or how I know of it, the "lammergeier"! Bird inspired gems are a good idea but that's not what I'm doing now ^^'

Plagioclase and Pigeonite Patterns!!!

A very fun lab today, looking how to determine the anorthite content of plagioclse. Plagioclase often shows with Albite Twinning (which is the characteristic alternating stripes we can see below in the first picture). When we turn the slide, these reverse (black becomes white). In between, theres an intermediate stage where the mineral is all the same colour, usually pale grey; this can be seen in the second picture bottom right. By measuring the difference in angle (approx 4-5°) when different sections go extinct (ie totally black) we can figure out the percentage of anorthite.

For the laymen: pyroxene crystals come in many shapes and crystal structures, and this one is distinguished by its resemblance to a pigeon feather. *coo coo*

The Natural History Visual Guide Random Draw

@foolishandfurious suggested 190/5 - Mock Orange (cornales) and 57/2 - Pigeonite

I was having some difficulty thinking of how to mash these two together in an interesting way, and then I remembered that I made this project up, and that I make the rules. So instead of being combined, the mock orange plant is hitching a ride to earth on a lunar meteor, which has formed pigeonite crystals.
