What exactly is Nevernight? I’ve seen some mentions on different blogs but I don’t know what it’s about, is it any good?
It a book about a girl who basically goes to Hogwarts for assassins. It’s a secret school/church you have to pay a murder tithe (the teeth of someone you killed!) to get into. And once you’re there you basically have to survive your peers and teachers trying to kill you. The school is based on a religion that worships the Maw/The Mother Of Blessed Murder. She was the sister-wife of Aa the sun god.
Mia, the main character, is not human. She’s a darkin. So she can walk through shadows and has a shadow companion named Mister Kindly who takes the shape of a cat (the only not-cat I’ll ever love). And she has to hide what she is because they live in a FANTASTICALLY BUILT world where three suns cross the sky and night only falls once every so many years. (Hence the name Nevernight.) Most people in her world worship the church of the sun god Aa and make the Mother of Blessed Murder (aka dark/night) their villain basically. (I’m really dumbing it down here, sorry!)
As a darkin, Mia is said to be blessed my the Mother. And because of it, the sun can make her weak. Also, items blessed by true believers of the sun god can blind her and send her shadows away and make her weak. But the key she learns is that “the brighter the light, the darker the shadow.”
In the first book her goal is to become a Blade (a graduate of the assassin school/church who gets hired to murder people through the school/church) so that’ she can kill the men responsible for murdering her family. And on this leg of her journey she encounters another darkin, the head of the school/church. And it’s sends her down a road to discovering who/what she is.
It’s filled with hilarious jokes, tasteful smut, and lots and lots and lots of blood.
I highly recommend it. My only issue with it is that the last book is coming out in September and WHAT WILL I DO AFTER?!
