It's 2am, have a story!
“Zoeya my dear! How are you?” Rythian’s mother asked, pulling Zoeya in for a hug. Zoeya accepted the gesture gratefully. She loved Rythian’s mother. Ever since Rythian and Zoeya first met at the tender age of 10, Rythian’s mother had welcomed Zoeya like one of the family. Now, 6 years later, Zoeya still found comfort in the arms of his mother. “I’m fine thanks!” Zoeya replied, reluctantly letting go of her. “Is Rythian around? I have a huge surprise for him!” “Yes dear, he’s upstairs in his room. I swear, if you get him down from his room and away from his books, I’ll give you a medal.” She answered, sighing slightly. She let Zoeya into the house and watched her disappear quickly up the stairs. She laughed to herself. She liked it when Zoeya came round; she provided a flash of joy and happiness in an otherwise bleak house. Zoeya reached Rythian’s door, pausing slightly to catch her breath. “Rythian, may I come in?”, she asked softly, rapping her knuckles on the door. After waiting a few minutes with no luck, Zoeya decided to push open the door ever so slightly. She peeked her head around the door and spotted a sleeping Rythian, with one of his many books open and covering his face. Zoeya giggled slightly to herself, than had a bright idea. She ran back downstairs and out the front door. “Bye dear” Rythian’s mother said without so much as look up from her cooking. “Hi dear” she said in greeting, as seconds later Zoeya came rushing back through the door and straight up the stairs. She did not notice the furry, grey bundle being clutched tightly by the young red-head. Zoeya approached Rythian’s door and, with much difficulty, pushed it open once again whilst also trying to balance the now moving grey bundle. “Psst, Ryth” Zoeya whispered, creeping up to the softly snoring mage. After a short silence, with no reply or common grumble from the mage, Zoeya lifted up the bundle and put it closer to his face. The bundle moved around slightly, struggling to break free from Zoeya’s grasp. When it realised struggling was pointless, it started looking around the room, its grey eyes finally settling on the sleeping Rythian. The creature leaned forward slightly, sniffing the air as it got closer to the boy. Slowly it opened its mouth… … and licked Rythian straight across the face, knocking the book off in the process. Rythian awoke with a start, flailing wildly around him as he tried to grab his ‘attacker’. After a moment he finally calmed down, realising he was just in his room and not back in the nightmare land of the End. Breathing slowly he allowed his eyes to adjust to the bright light streaming through his window, until they fell on the laughing Zoeya. Her laughter was beautiful to hear, and he smiled at her happiness. Until he realised she was in his room while he was sleeping. Then he realised he was topless; and there was a wolf in his room. He hurriedly grabbed his covers and pulled them up to his neck, spotting a small blush emerging in Zoeya’s cheeks. Then he noticed the wolf that she was playing with. Wait did he say wolf? A loud bark echoed around the walls of his room as if in answer to his question. “Zoeya…” began Rythian slowly, trying to make sense of the situation; “…why is there a wolf in my room?” “Well you were asleep!” Zoeya answered simply, as though that was a crystal clear reason. She looked up at Rythian, following the silence after her answer. Sighing, she explained, “ I wanted you to meet your new pet!” “My new pet?! Zoeya, it’s a wolf! How did you even tame it?!” “With this!” the girl said, producing a bone from her small rucksack. The wolf looked at it with interest, wagging his long tail at the sight. “But the really good surprise is that I have one too! It’s out in the garden, c’mon!” She grabbed his hand and eagerly pulled him out of his room and down the stairs, the wolf happily following behind. “Zoeya! I’m not dressed, I’m only wearing my pyjama bottoms!” Rythian cried, blushing slightly from his lack of apparel. “Silly Rythian, the wolf is not going to mind what you look like!” Zoeya giggled, not letting go of his hand. “I mind what you think though…” Rythian mumbled to himself. “What?” “Nothing- hey mum? We’re just popping out… apparently” Rythian explained to his mother as they passed through the kitchen towards the front door, grateful for the sudden change of topic. “Ok dear, be careful!” his mother replied, watching Zoeya pull Rythian with all of her strength. She smiled at the sight; “Oh, and Rythian?” “Yes mum?” “Protect her.” Zoeya and Rythian eventually reached the spot where she left her wolf. The animal was just lying there, bathing in the sun rays which broke through the canopy of leaves above. She finally let go of Rythian’s hand and ran over to pet the sleeping wolf. Rythian watched her run off, feeling a sudden coldness creep into his fingers at the loss of her hand. “Zoeya, why exactly have you tamed these wolves?” Rythian questioned, hoping beyond hope for a logical answer. “Rythian, every good mage and apprentice need sidekick pets to protect them!” Zoeya explained, sighing at her friend’s lack of sidekick knowledge. “Zoeya, we can’t keep them! They may have fleas or a disease of some kind…” Rythian began, wrinkling his nose at the thought; “We need to release them back into the forest.” “B-But Ryth, they may get attacked by the Creepers or the Zombles! How could you let them just run into such a fate?!” Zoeya cried, her eyes brimming with tears while she pouted at the mage. His words had stung her a little bit; why would she bring him two animals that could harm them? “Besides… I taught them a trick.” “Oh did you now?” Rythian asked imploringly. He noticed how hurt she was by his words, and cursed himself at his carelessness. “Go on, show me the trick.” Zoeya smiled at Rythian’s approval, and quickly turned around to face her wolf. Holding up a bone that she grabbed from her rucksack, she quickly got the wolf’s attention. Slowly, without breaking eye contact with the wolf, she knelt next to it and raised her other hand. The wolf watched her as Zoeya bent her fingers to make a gun shape. She pointed the ‘gun’ at the wolf and, after counting to three, shouted bang. The wolf suddenly stumbled around on the spot, still watching Zoeya as if for her approval, and eventually fell onto his side. Zoeya looked up from the wolf and looked at Rythian, her smile emphasising how proud she was of herself. “What do you think?!” she asked. “That was brilliant Zoeya! Well done!” the young boy cheered, happy because she was happy. She squealed at his approval and ran back to where he was sitting, before jumping onto him and tackling him to the ground in a huge bear hug. Rythian yelped in surprise, before allowing himself to hug her back. “So… can we keep them?” Zoeya whispered, not letting go of Rythian. “Of course we can Zoeya, of course.” came the reply, hugging her even tighter. He breathed her in, the scent of pine trees and flowers filling his head. In that moment, Rythian was content, a feeling he had not felt for years. “Zoeya, do you know why my mother loves you?” “Umm, because I’m awesome?” replied Zoeya, breaking away to look at him properly. Rythian smiled at her response. “Well, yes…”, he began, “but she also loves you for a different reason.” He looked at her blue eyes, before working out what he wanted to say next. “Zoeya, you make my life… better. I was struggling by myself, and I had a lot of demons I had to – and still have to- deal with. But whenever you come round and bring me surprises, or whenever we go on our magical adventures, you make all of them demons disappear completely.” He paused, sighing as he tried to tell her how he felt. “What I’m trying to say Zoeya is that, you make me happy; and my mother loves that you seem to be able to make me laugh whenever she can’t. You are just … just-…” Zoeya smiled at his nerves as he struggled for the right words to say. She leaned forward and kissed him slightly on the cheek, before nuzzling herself back into his warm arms. He sat there dazed for a second, before looking down. He brushed her hair out of her eyes, and softly whistled the wolves over, stroking the grey one behind the ears. All four of them stayed together like that for the whole afternoon, and Rythian and Zoeya watched the sun set and the stars appear through the ceiling of leaves above them. “Rythian?” Zoeya whispered, breaking the comfortable silence; “What tree are we sitting under?” “This, my dear, is a willow tree.” “Ok. I like that as a name, Willow.” Zoeya replied, thinking out loud. “I think I’ll name my wolf Willow. Do you know what you will name yours Ryth?” Rythian thought carefully for a few moments, before replying, “Ghost.” Zoeya did not question his unusual choice of name. Rythian smiled at the designated name. Now he will always be reminded of this day. The day Zoeya brought two wolves to show Rythian, before making ghosts out of the demons that plagued him.
