#pill shaming

People claiming to be medical professionals shit-posting false information on Twitter to shame people who take antidepressants into not taking them, slamming and insulting doctors who proved them wrong in the comments, and when I asked them *their* medical qualification for postulating such "knowledge" with confidence (despite being proven wrong repeatedly) they threatened to sue me for slander. 🙂‍↕️Like, they took screenshots and all and tagged the local police account of my home city and it was a whole thing! To which an *actual* doctor replied "They (the OP) apparently don't understand how the brain works" and now the OP is suing them for slander as well. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Apparently asking people their qualification and/or doubting their expertise in light of multiple receipts of their lack thereof = slander

Twitter is a wild place.

Based on a post I saw from someone dealing with mental illness...

Let me 110% clear;

If you take medication to help deal with a mental illness, like depression, ADHD, PTSD, Bipolar, whatever...

And it’s actually helping you deal with life...

And your family and/or friends are trying to GUILT you into stopping, or have actually made you feel ashamed enough to stop...

And it’s only made it even harder for you to deal...

Then I have just one thing to say to them:

Fuck them

FUCK your family if they do this.

FUCK your friends if they do this.

FUCK ANYONE that does this!

Because there is no shame or guilt into needing to take medication to help deal with mental illness. It’s the same as dealing with physical pain; you would take a painkiller for that, right? Then what the hell is wrong with taking a pill to help stabilize your mood? Or help you focus? Or to just fucking deal with anything?

If you have anyone telling you that you should be ashamed for taking medication for a mental illness, then they are the garbage of the earth, the fucking scum of existence, and not worth a lick of your time, energy, or breath.

They are NOT you, they are not in your head, they are not the ones in pain. YOU are, and if the meds help, then dude, take them. Take them and fuck what those people say.

What is pill shaming?

Let’s say you’ve finally decided to talk with your doctor about what you’re experiencing.

You’re even open to taking medication to help rebalance your brain’s chemistry.

Then a friend tells you that you don’t need pills. You just need to work out more, or eat better, or spend a bit of time meditating.

This is a form of pill shaming.

Pill shaming occurs when someone expresses negative opinions or disdain when you tell them you’re using medication to treat a mental health issue.

They assume — wrongly — that taking medication signifies weakness of character or an inability to work through tough times.

“The reality is, psychotropic medication is being prescribed to assist in medically balancing a chemical imbalance,” Gold explains. “Unfortunately, many individuals suffering from this condition do not wish to be treated with medication due to societal stigma and a misunderstanding of what this diagnosis actually means.”

It’s not just friends, families, or strangers on the Internet that may attempt to weigh you down with this shame.

“This belief is pervasive in our culture as a whole, but is even found in some self-help books or mutual-help support groups,” Hu said. “It is never helpful to shame individuals struggling with mental health issues and to discourage them from getting help in the same way that they would for any other medical condition.”
