a lot of times i would find myself struggling to finish cleaning things when the real problem was that I didn't actually have a permanent place for things to go once I had actually picked them up.

once I was making sure I had shelves or bins or organization things first, it became a lot easier to actually finish tidying things up since I knew where things were supposed to belong

It’s strange how online is the only place you can properly vent about chronic illness, because IRL there’s the issue that if you don’t have Symptoms at the moment, you feel like an attention seeker if you talk about it, and when you do have Symptoms, you have to clench your teeth together through the pain and explain very calmly to the very concerned bystanders that this is normal, calling an ambulance will solve nothing and make everything ten times more stressful, going to the urgent care clinic will solve nothing and make everything ten times more stressful, and what is the polite way of saying «please leave me the fuck alone until I’m better if all you’re going to do is freak out next to me and demand I reassure you that I’m okay when I’m on the bathroom floor cold sweating and retching»?

Meanwhile, online people will go «man, that sucks», and you go «yeah it sure does» and that’s that and it kinda helps a bit

I guess the takeaway here is that if you are the family member/partner/friend of someone with chronic illness, one of the most productive conversations you can have with them at a time when they’re not experiencing severe symptoms is «what do you need from me when you’re having a flare/bad day/week?»

Some people want sympathy, a hand to hold, someone to bring them a glass of water, a hot water bottle, a blanket.

Some people want to be left alone. Maybe the best thing you can do is go into the other room and do the dishes or whatnot.

Learn what the «normal» symptoms are so you’re able to stay calm when they appear.

Recognise that for most chronic illnesses there’s nothing you can do to make things better, it’s not your responsibility to try to fix things, and the most you can or should do about the medical side of things is offer to come along to medical appointments if the person with the illness wants you there (and they might not, for reasons that have nothing to do with you as a person).

And remember that it’s not your illness, and two people suffering instead of one won’t make anything better. If your loved one lashes out verbally at you while in the middle of a symptom episode, you can recognise that they’re stuck with an illness they never asked for and barely know what to do with themselves, but you’re also allowed your own boundaries, and if the person with the illness isn’t willing to have a conversation afterwards about how to prevent them taking their frustration with their illness out on you, you’re allowed to take a step back for your own well-being.

Everyone loves a cycle aware Orpheus but what about a cycle aware Eurydice? Eurydice who tries her hardest to resist the hunger and the cold. Tries to convince Orpheus to just LOOK UP time and time again to no avail. Eurydice who KNOWS and still fails. She knows he’s gonna turn around. She knows they’re not gonna make it out of hell together. But she hopes. Every time she hopes that he loves her a little bit less than the last time. Hopes he won’t look back.
