After having released last year’s great A New Place 2 Drown under his actual name, Archy Marshall is back with a new song titled “Feel Safe 88 (Just Say No)" under his new alias Pimp Shrimp. While skewering closer to the music that he makes under the King Krule moniker, the drumming could have nimbly slid onto last year’s A New Place 2 Drown without deviating too far from that template. While his last album found him slurring bleak bars of existential uncertainty from some estranged gutter, here he returns to full fledged crooner mode as he tries to give some practical wisdom to a woman in his life. Throughout the course of the song he harmonizes with himself resulting in a gorgeous fusion of his normal low inflection and vocals towards the upper end of his register, and it’s an ideal pairing given the subject matter. He moves deftly from assurance to reflections on youthful naivety “Don’t waste away, don’t ever feel ashamed, so easy how, we fall in love, and feel like we’ll never make a change” with his vocals superbly wrapping themselves around the jittery percussion and minor organ chords. As of yet there’s no word on an official album on the way from Archy, any under particular alias, but his latest offering from his new alias certainly suggests that there’s no shortage of directions for him to take his music.
