i thought pine was bad for mice? something about it smelling too strong for them? ive always been told that you should never use pine bedding for rodents

Phenols!! So- way before the modern method of kiln drying, pine used to have a hecking TON of phenol oils in it- which was super upsetting to rodent respiratory systems. However! We’ve long since had our kiln drying methods updated, which removes *So much* of those phenols and renders it safe to use, even when soaked with urine!

Cedar is still super bad, and has so much of this oil that no matter how much you kiln dry it, it can still be super harmful to smaller rodents such as mice, rats, guinea pigs, etc. But there’s debate about it for rabbits, though I haven’t seen enough studies on it to be comfortable using it at all. Plus it makes me itch.

Pine is actually the top rated ammonia control in studies! They found it outproduced cob bedding, carefresh bedding, and aspen bedding in trials!
