“The Chitrakathi (picture stories) paintings from Pinguli illustrate local versions of epic stories. They were made by itinerant artists in Pinguli village, Sindhudurg district, in southern Maharashtra. One of the most popular is the Shri Jaimini Ashvamedha, a Marathi adaption of one book of the epic Mahabharata. This relates the events surrounding a ceremonial horse sacrifice performed at the behest of the Pandava king Yudhishthira. The most essential trait of Pinguli paintings is a figure scale large enough to be intelligible from a distance, an effect enhanced by the bold juxtaposition of forms of contrasting colours and of coloured forms against patches of a plain background.”
