I had this wonderful idea that I would hike the Snake Creek gap portion of the Pinhoti trail to Dug Gap mountain in Dalton. In one day. By myself. In the middle of July. My husband insisted that I take Skeeter, our Australian Shepherd with me. We started out early that morning. Skeeter was pulling the leash, eager to explore a new trail. We hiked, took small breaks. About halfway through, I missed a trail marker. Turned back about an hour later to find it. But this time it was hot and miserable, and Skeeter was diving into every mud puddle we came across. His motivation had checked out and mine was flagging. I’d never been so happy to see a turkey foot in all my life.
