September 2014:
Mira had been making odd lunches for the past few days. At first she was putting ketchup on everything – ketchup on toast, ketchup on macaroni, ketchup on ham paninis, black olives dipped in ketchup. But it wasn’t until she noticed something was very odd when she started making ketchup, cheeze whizz and olive sandwiches. Joey was the one who noticed.
“Mommy, what are you doing?” he asked, giggling at what his mother was eating.
“Eating lunch, honey,” she said, chuckling at him.
“It’s silly!” he said, pointing at her sandwich.
She wondered why he thought it was silly. It tasted good – to her, at least. She’d been craving something like it ever since she got back home from work. Mira took a sip of her orange juice and pondered. “Well, maybe I am just silly,” said Mira, setting the glass down to tickle Joey. He laughed and she laughed – and then she stopped laughing.
Mira shook her head. No. Nope. No way.
“Mommy, what’s wrong?” asked Joey.
“Uh...Mama’s gotta go potty, okay?” she said, lifting Joey down from the counter. “Why don’t you go find daddy and I’ll be right back.”
So Joey went off to find Ulric while Mira ran into the bathroom.
* * *
She sifted through the shelf above the sink before finding an unused pregnancy test she’d kept since last year. Mira opened it up, yanked down her shorts and sat down on the toilet. “Can’t believe I’m doing this,” she mumbled while sticking the pregnancy test underneath her.
One, two three and she was done, capped the test and flushed the toilet. She washed her hands then sat on the floor, waiting for the results to show up. She laughed. “There’s no way. Nooo way.”
But after a while, the results on the pregnancy test showed otherwise. Those two little pink lines stared at her as she stared right back. Mira let the test drop on her lap. She leaned her head back against the bathroom wall and and looked up at the ceiling. Of course there was nothing wrong with having another baby; they were definitely financially stable to raise another baby. But having another baby this quickly wasn't in Mira's forecast.
But then she supposed that's how life was – full of surprises.
Then she started laughing again, shaking her head. “Oh, Lord…” she said, glancing to the door, knowing she had to tell Ulric.
Here we go again.
