Evelyn Marshall Field (Mrs. Marshall Field III)
Artist: Sir William Orpen (Irish, 1878–1931)
Date: ca. 1921
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, CT, United States
The sitter here, Evelyn Marshall Field, was the New York-born wife of Marshall Field III, heir to the Chicago department store fortune. They met in London, married in Chicago in 1915, and divorced fifteen years later. At that time, she described herself and her husband to reporters as having “nothing in common. We are as far apart as the sun and the moon.”
