Pink and White Carnations: A Charming Old Mother’s Day Custom

When I was growing up, and for many years after, every Mother’s Day my church observed a charming old custom. Before the first service that unseen army known as the Altar Guild placed a basket of pink carnations and white carnations in the narthex, along with a supply of straight pins. Each person entering the church took one of the carnations -- pink to indicate the wearer’s mother was still living, white to denote she was not. Ladies wore their carnations as corsages. Gentlemen wore theirs as boutonnières.

On Mother’s Day wearing a pink carnation honors a mother who is still living.

Wearing a white carnation on Mother’s Day honors the memory of a mother who passed away.

For three years now I have qualified for the white carnation. But this does not make me sad.

I have found the blessing of a wonderful mother continues even after her time on this earth ends.
