The Boy In the Woods

There’s a boy in the woods. He frolics through the trees, hands drawn upward. A delightful smile sits upon his pasty white cheeks. The sun reveals hope in his eyes and gives his mahogany stained hair a spotlight. Youth is painted smooth against his boyish frame as he plays barefooted against the rough exterior of the forest floor.

I want to call out to him, but what do I say? I don’t know his name; the winds haven’t whispered it yet.

His happiness comes from afar; he’s unaware that I search it. All he cares about is his fantasies. “The ground is lava!” he screams. I tuck my feet under my butt and avoid the cold, hard floor of my hospital room.
