The Big O: Alive Again.

It's official! The Big O is alive again after a two year hiatus.

A huge thanks is due to all who helped save this legendary skate spot, but especially Montreal skate crusaders Marc Tison and Barry Walsh.

The Montreal skate community was at Olympic Stadium yesterday with bells on to celebrate the Big O Rebirth. Skaters -- both young and old -- skated, bands played, people congregated, caught up, and clinked beers. It was amazing to see many of the original Big O pioneers reconnect, recalling, for example, the early 80's when the spot was barely skateable because there was still track rubber on it, or reminiscing about their early experiences there.

Some swapped stories about its humbling powers. While signing his spread in a copy of Tison and Walsh's book about the Big O, Pipe Fiends, Orion Revolution recalled how the concrete giant nearly killed him back in '86, leaving him with five stitches on the back of his head. The Big O has doled out a lot of lessons over the past 25 or so years, resilience and first aid being at the top of the curriculum. But, as my father always says, it's the tough stuff that builds character.
