real actual conversation I had with my friend once
A couple of the memes I shared were from a canvas full of stuff, so I thought, "Why not just share the rest?"
These are from a brush test I did in 2022 for default tools in csp. Lots of random stuff, that one SCP that can't die, practicing wrinkles on some OCs, more characters still but playing around with them if they were the same race as Serah and Viper (as well as myself as one for some reason), and some dragons of course
There's a second one of these I'll be posting in like a week
I was surprised to see some people express an interest in my Starbound characters, and I've been thinking about it ever since, so I hope you guys don't mind if I open up about them a bit. Here's the first character I played as after being introduced to Frackin' Universe.
This is Neutron, a member of the X'i race. Their story is more than a few years old now and not quite up to my current standards, but I hope that you enjoy it anyways.
------------------------------------------------------------
As a new and oblivious seedling, they were discovered by a star faring group of human scientists from Earth. At first, the group took the infant alien in and hoped to use them to improve relations between the species, but two of the scientists, an older couple, came to care for them like their own child.
Despite the X'i's natural level of radioactivity, the couple was able to adopt the infant, and at first brought them along on their studies, teaching them many of the things they'd known. The child took a quick interest in physics, and the couple would name them Neutron soon after. Eventually, after several years, they would retire back to their home planet and bring Neutron with them.
Once coming of age, Neutron decided they wanted to become part of Earth's Protectorate, mostly to travel and begin their own studies out in the galaxy. Their parents, now much older and just wanting to enjoy their retirement in peace, would stay on Earth and communicate with them from afar.
However, after the induction ceremony, the Ruin came. It tore the planet of Earth apart, and Neutron's parents were two of the many casualties lost that day. Neutron themselves managed to make it to a junker starship, which was thrown from the planet during the final blast.
Neutron awakened after several days, finding radioactive bulbs growing on their skin. At first, they did not remember what had happened. They walked through the wrecked ship as S.A.I.L spoke to them, informing them of their next steps, but the AI was ignored. Neutron went first to a handheld communication device that their parents had given them for their travels. Even though the system within the ship was beyond repair, this was always supposed to reach them - but there was only static.
Once they remembered what had transpired, they began to tear the bulbs from themselves, bringing their emotional anguish into a physical form as well. Neutron broke down and landed on their knees as the faint green glow of the bulbs around them slowly began to fade.
After another day or so, Neutron's hunger has become insatiable. Though they wish to die as well, they have noticed and begun staring at the seemingly lush planet their ship had brought them to. S.A.I.L's constant prodding to visit the unfamiliar world was wearing on their nerves, and begrudgingly, they decided to go and investigate.
While upon the planet, Neutron would notice its nature's unmistakable similarity to Earth's, although it was of course hardly inhabited. They traveled across it's surface, meeting the occasional starhopper, and even a few who simply lived there.
Eventually they came upon a lab, which was tended to by a massive, sapient amphibian creature. Enthusiastic for a student, the being enlisted Neutron's help in fixing some of his broken machinery. Even in their current state, Neutron was able to remember their fascination with the sciences, and agreed.
The final task given to Neutron saw them travel all the way down to the core of the planet, where the heat was scorching. Neutron was particularly averse to heat, and it was here that they once again began to think of how easy it would be to let go, to let the magma consume them. It would take only seconds.
But some part of them wanted to keep going, to keep learning, in their parents' wake. Even the planet they'd accidentally come upon was full of new knowledge and experiences. Neutron realized that to fully honor their parents' wishes, they should continue to chase their own.
Now, Neutron travels in a ship they built themselves, using the junker as a base. It is full of the research they've gathered. They still wear the remains of the ripped Protectorate uniform around their neck and carry the communication device without fail, and their goal never changes - to continue to study, even when that research sometimes blows up, literally.

Future Serah in a business suit. I think it's a little tight on her
I know it's been a long time since I posted any of my ocs but it's forever too easy for me to draw this big scary strong lady
Brush test 2022 #2, part 2.
I'm not sure why I randomly started coloring stuff on this one, but we got plenty of creatures, including a couple of failed attempts at a Demogorgon. I also discovered my new permanent favorite sketching brush while drawing Viper and Blaze again. Someone please stop me.
Wait but then I won't be able to make their comic
My second Starbound character is actually someone who has since been repurposed for one(or possibly more) of my comic stories. Still, I thought it would be fun to revisit her origins and incorporate some of the traits and family members I've given her since.
This is Rath, a member of the Nightar race. After playing the supposed hard-mode that was the X'i race, I chose something that was OP in comparison. Sue me.
Here's a summary of her story, as well.
.
Rath's family came from a very poor area of an already dangerous Dark world. Not long after she reached adulthood, her father, who'd previously been a prolific enough hunter to feed and care for the small group, suddenly passed away of a mysterious illness. Rath was forced to take his place. She'd practiced under him for long enough to become very skilled, but feeding her mother and two much younger brothers was still no easy task in such a place.
One day, a star traveler, a member of the Protectorate, arrived on her planet, and upon discovering her, wished to enlist her for a short quest. She agrees, knowing she'll be paid for her work, which would make her family's lives easier for at least a day. The traveler ends up being so impressed with her prowess, however, that he wants to bring her along on their travels. Rath refuses, adamant in her wish to stay and provide for her family. The traveler lets his invitation persist, but goes on his way for the time being.
Rath returns to the difficult life she's led for a while longer, but the traveler's offer sticks in her head. It could be a constant source of income, something she's never had the chance to have on her planet. She knew that the lives of her family could be made so much easier if she was able to find out how to procure food and other necessities elsewhere in the universe.
On the traveler's next visit back, Rath informs him of her change in mind, but on the condition that she be allowed to return and visit her family after each quest. He agrees and builds a teleport pad, placing it on the planet near her family's camp. He shows her that it can be used to return at will, from no matter the distance. Rath is ecstatic about this arrangement, and becomes much more confident in her decision.
Things were different while she lived on a ship with a like-minded crew, under the traveler who would become her captain. As the star-farers visited all sorts of planets and environments, she did in fact see how bad her family's quality of life had been. Of course, the work wasn't always easy either, but she never refused it. All that mattered to her was keeping her family safe and cared for, and she kept her word, visiting them after every single quest, bringing back food, clothing, and wealth. It wasn't a substantial amount, but it was still more than enough.
Eventually came the time where their captain would visit Earth. Instinctually, Rath knew something was wrong, and she refused to leave the ship and touch that world's grounds with the rest of the crew. All of the others left her behind to visit the rest of the Protectorate, but while they were there, the Ruin arrived.
The captain was the only one able to escape back to their ship, but was badly injured in the process. Unable to fly himself, the captain hastily attempted to teach Rath how to steer the ship so they could escape the dying planet. However, she ended up crashing them into a remote asteroid, far away.
Luckily the place was inhabited, and her captain was able to receive medical treatment, but he had been injured such that he was no longer able to travel the stars. Their ship, too, was all but destroyed, and Rath had no way to return to her family.
Knowing he would stay on this rock for the foreseeable future, the captain told Rath to scrap his destroyed ship and build her own, and that the builders here would help her on his word as a member of the Protectorate. He told her to take this ship and, hopefully, find her family again.
Rath had never truly been on her own before, even as independent of a hunter she was on her home planet. Still, she accepted, and was able to have the wrecked ship decommissioned. The captain had just enough money left to pay for the completion of the new ship, and was able to teach Rath the rest he knew about flying before she left, but she promised she would one day return and do the same for him that he allowed her to do for her family.
Eventually she tracked them down once again, and this time, she convinced them to join her on her travels and get away from the terrible land they'd called home for so long.
just another oc lol don't mind me
This is Ryan. He's an... 'old friend' of Serah's.
In honor of her FINALLY being mentioned on my Patreon(check it out! Everything is free!), you guys can have this mini comic related to her backstory lol
it's an example of things to look forward to, I guess??? if anyone is looking forward to any of this???????
Brush test 2022 #2, part 1.
These canvases really get whack sometimes huh lol
We got dragons, Viper, more Viper for some reason, Viper and Blaze, because I'm secretly addicted to drawing fluff, and my old Starbound character Neutron. I kinda miss drawing them, now that I see them again.
Part two comes next week!
