Hey! The personal art train has been incredibly slow lately due to me being absolutely swamped by commission work this past month (thank you so much everyone!), but I’ve been chipping away at some design tweaks for Austri here and finally finished them today :D I told myself that I wasn’t going to do a full sheet, and then promptly changed my mind once it started going well xD I swear these sheets only get longer, haha!
I think the first version of her design was perfectly serviceable as it was so I didn’t change a ton here, but I felt I could give her better overall shapes and commit more fully to the jellyfish inspiration, particularly with her hat. Her first ref sheet was from 2019, so she was due for an update anyway. She’s somehow even more adorable than before :’D Enjoy! ---------- The constellation symbol for Piscis Austinus was originally designed by Denis Moskowitz and released to the public domain.

Fomalhaut (fixed in the sign of pisces at 3° (from 1940-2009) and now at 4° (from 2010 until 2080)) is the fixed star of the constellation of Piscis Austrinus - this is not the same constellation as Pisces, though it is stationed near the constellations of Aquarius and Pisces. Like Pisces, it is shaped like a fish. Fomalhaut is considered among one of the brightest stars in the night sky - it is stationed at the mouth of the fish-like constellation. Among the astrology community, the star is thought to represent talent. While stories very across cultures as to who each constellation represents the one I hear the most often for Piscis Austrinus is the Syrian goddess, Atargatis (sometimes referred to as Derketo or Derceto - depending on translation). Atargatis was a queen thought to have been born of the gods and raise by doves. Atargatis drowned herself in a lake and was transformed into fish - some believe that she was the first mer-person to have existed. Her myth is often assimilated with Astarte and Aphrodite. Meanwhile, in Egyptian myth, "The Great Fish, Abtu" saved the life of Isis, so she placed it in the heavens. Creating a single meaning for a fixed star is hard to do when myths of multiple cultures are connected to a constellation (the meaning(s) might shift depending on which culture is telling the tale), but, IN MY OPINION, Fomalhaut's house placement can provide insight on a) your ability to transform, b) your mysticism, and/or c) your ability to save other's with you energy (which could be why so many people connect Fomalhaut with creativity/talent).

"Piscis Austrinus + Volans - The Southern Fish" by Melissa Somerville
Piscis Austrinus is associated with confidence and bravery that comes with being in one’s element. In the myth of Atargatis, the Syrian fertility goddess fell into a lake and was rescued by a large fish. The great fish shows up again as the savior of the Egyptian god, Isis, who memorialized the fish in the sky alongside the stars. Volans, by contrast, is often seen as the “fish out of water.” Depicted as a flying fish, Volans is often seen leaping into the air, away from Dorado, the swordfish, in order to save itself and escape its fate.
In a reading, the individual takes on the watery qualities of the fish, good or bad. Upright, Piscis Austrinus is a protector, confidently coming to the aid of those in need. This card indicates a fluid, resourceful, chivalrous, and noble savior. The card also symbolizes one who is sure of their abilities and steadfast in realizing theirduties.
Reversed, the focus is on the attributes of Volans. An individual may take flight at the slightest sign of trouble. It symbolizes departure, cowardice, and self-consciousness.
Sometimes I’m having so much fun writing a scene that I forget I was supposed to be finishing it quickly so I can have my main character move on to the next point of the plot. What the hell. This was suppose to be a two-paragraph summary of a meeting before Loke leaves to visit his guild mates like wtf brain stop getting ideas.
(But I’m having a ton of fun lol I love this)
