Hi! I'm sorry if this has already been answered but I couldn't find a FAQ ;--; Is there anywhere I could see more about your process?? Like drawing videos, or tutorials? I'm super curious about what program(s) you use and how you achieve the look of your art (which is gorgeous btw!!!) Do you use layering? Is that even posible in pixel art?? Am I making you uncomfortable by asking too many questions???????????
Hello! It’s no problem at all, I almost never receive asks here so I’m glad :)
I started making pixel art only recently so I’m still experimenting a lot with the process. Yes, I use a lot of layers! I don’t know about programs such as Aseprite since I haven’t used them yet, but with Clip Studio it is possible.
The original canvas I used for this example is 50x50 px and is enlarged here for easier viewing. The brush I used for everything is the pixel pen from this pack.
I start with a sketch, then make a copy of it (just in case I don’t like the result) and start cleaning it.
I lock the transparent pixels of this “lineart” layer and change the color. Then I make a new layer underneath for the flat colors. I like to use other people’s palettes (Lospec has a great selection) or choose colors from some of my older drawings.
Next step is to make new layers for lights and shadows. After that it becomes a bit more chaotic as I start messing around, zooming in and out to see how it will look in its original size. That’s how the shape of her face changed and her hair became rounder. Then I merge everything minus the background into a new layer.
And that’s it! I hope that was somehow useful. Here is the result in its original size:
