hey whyd the show give the only (named) wheelchair user a hospital wheelchair
ok now that i’ve got it on the brain, i want to talk about disability in pjo and specifically how calling percy jackson dumb or treating him as such is not only a mischaracterization, but ableism. as a quick note, i’m keeping this to just percy to avoid having this already long post be even longer, but there are other disabled characters in pjo worthy of discussion. i bring up percy specifically because he is mostly the character i have seen people treat as dumb.
percy is a dyslexic teen with ADHD who comes from a low-income family, raised by a single mother, and deals with an abusive step-father. i cannot stress enough how much of his character is shaped by that experience, but as hard as it is to single out any one part, i am going to focus on his ADHD and dyslexia. this kid has nightmares of being forced to take tests in a straightjacket as teachers ask him if he’s stupid and withhold him from recess with his peers. he is constantly labelled as “troubled” and blamed for things he didn’t do or aren’t his fault. he is told, over and over again, that he is “not normal” (othering him). he bounces between schools. he struggles to make friends. he deals with bullying. he has difficulty studying and reading, even when invested. teachers struggle to connect with him and tend to just give up on him. these are real disabled experiences, and rick does a good job at presenting them. sometimes, it feels like everything is a struggle. you are living inside a system that not only is restricting, but actively works against and punishes you.
in contrast, CHB is a great example of how when environments meet the needs of disabled people, it hugely changes how disabled we are in that environment. demigod brains are hard-wired for ancient greek, not english, and they’re born impulsive, with high energy levels that help them survive battle—but aren’t very good for a classroom setting. but by having them read books in greek, regularly do lots of training/physical activities, and have genuine opportunities to express themselves…they function pretty damn well. percy discovers that while he struggles academically, he is brilliant in combat and capable of saving the world numerous times—he is a hero. it is here, in camp half-blood, that percy finds a place he belongs, that shows him his worth—finally, somewhere is built to not only include him, but to nurture and genuinely prepare him for the world outside its boarders. however, i think people forget that just because percy functions in the world of CHB and the gods, that does not mean he doesn’t face ableism in the mortal world—and that there is an entire group of people who see ourselves reflected in his character.
i could talk for hours about how percy’s humor revolves around coping with his environment and actually displays a very low self esteem after being looked down upon his entire life. this kid doesn’t even have to say anything and he screams ‘i had a neurodivergent childhood.’ but about five years ago, when i was more regularly tuned into the fandom, every time i saw someone call percy jackson dumb or an idiot, even jokingly, i raised an eyebrow, and now that the series is getting fresh coverage from disney+, i have wanted to make this post. so much of this kid’s life and personality comes from being treated like he’s dumb or incapable, so it’s troubling to watch part of the fanbase reflect the harmful parts of this character’s upbringing. i truly hope it does not become common again. it’s also one thing coming from a neurodivergent/disabled person with similar experiences (and even then i personally find it a little uncomfortable), it’s another to be said by a neurotypical/able bodied person.
percy jackson’s experiences make for very important representation, and for people to characterize him as just a goofy, unintelligent guy is not only an insult to his character as a kid who is intelligent, but previously lacked the environment to show it, but also ableist. so in the dawn of the new tv series era, i ask that we cut that shit out. rick riordan did not create rep for neurodivergent and disabled kids for them to be called stupid by the fanbase. even jokingly.
i'm actually pretty annoyed with this one line.... delusions aren't cute they're often extremely terrifying and while it's nice to not see delusions being demonized calling them/someone struggling with them "cute" for having delusions in the same way one talks about a puppy isn't a better alternative. trust me people already doubt delusional people enough even when we're not being delusional, we don't need the infantalism.
All jokes aside what are your opinions on Will? Truthfully?
Ok ok so again I don’t actually hate Will I hate the fandom and their inability to be critical of the bigotry present in his writing. Will isn’t a real person but real people are choosing to write him like that 😭 anyway :
I do think there’s a constant pattern of ableism that needs to be addressed not just by his position but how he chooses to interact w other characters and how he prioritizes his opinion over other characters bodily autonomy
He’s stated to be nice but I would call this an informed trait more so than anything present in the writing honestly he’s a bit of a dick and that’s fine if that was acknowledged by the fandom and the writing again I’m not against character flaws
Genuinely him being mean but thought to be nice vs Nico being nice but thought to be mean would be hilarious if it was actually acknowledged
He did victim blame Nico in boo and that is certainly :/ I choose to read that as him projecting but I do not like the fandom running w that as if Nico was actually responsible for his alienation. Again I do not hold this over the character as much as the fandom
He is over bearing and he does seem to think his opinion matters more than others and again flaws r fine if they’re acknowledged as such if him being over bearing is his fatal flaw ok just acknowledge it 😭
I think there’s is some homophobic backlash to him yeah but genuinely a lot of his criticism is from other q fans mad that Nico is paired w a side character outa no where over building a relationship over multiple books and I do think the fandom has a knee jerk reaction to say homophobia in response over legitimate criticism
I think you could definitely build an interesting relationship between the two but you would have to actually be aware and avoid the ableism present in their current dynamic-I do think there is potential. I do think there is potential to his character but genuinely he’s a little bland
The fact that there’s will stans building this whole character and back story instead of stanning the characters of color w “flawed writing” (Leo/Hazel/Frank) and even choosing to dislike them over their canon or lack of canon writing. Clownery. Absolute clownery like if Will is your fav character you genuinely hate women and characters of color 😭
But again if you’re building a character from the ground up as long as you avoid the ableist stuff idk
Oh also idk about the age retcon I do think it’s an incredible lack of self awareness (and also it’s funny) when people complain about like Jasico because Nico’s age was retconned but still ship Solangelo but genuinely idc about it I think Nico should be older actually retcons r fine they’re a writing tool that’s actually what they’re for 😭 they’re not like inherently bad
Main point is go crazy just literally so the bare minimum and listen to disabled people that are uncomfortable w parts of their canon and fanon dynamic 😭 literally no one is cancelling anyone or attacking anyone just like, asking people not to write ableist rhetoric 😭🙏
Anyway Solangelo is an inherently ableist ship, Will canonically is a bad person to Nico in hoo, and certainly not perfect later on and guess what else? People are allowed to be uncomfortable with it!! You don’t have to agree!! Just move on!! But when Disabled people point out ableism you (neurotypical/able bodied people) don’t get to debate it!! You can disagree w/o debating because your opinion isn’t of equal value!! But! You can just block and move on!! Literally no one is stopping you!!
May I just say some of you Solangelo shippers got very comfortable and are like weird as hell like I know we stopped making Solangelo critical posts for five minutes but that doesn’t give you the right to be genuinely painfully ableist 💕 and again frankly weird as hell
You know maybe just maybe bringing up discourse from a year ago just to get people to attack solangelo shippers is why people hate you. They were jokes about height. Leave my friends alone and stop bringing that bs up. They’re not fucking ableist you’re just fucking sensitive
Ok so couple things :
I did not bring it up again. It was getting reblogged again w/o the context in which the posts were made.
Me clarifying has has nothing to do with the ship or shippers in a negative light. I was clarifying so op wasn’t gonna be harassed over a year old “joke”
Shippers hate me for sm other reasons 😭
Being “jokes” about height doesn’t mean they’re except from ableism. 1. Heightism is a legitimate form of ableism. 2. The jokes hinged Nico being disabled (being too tired, unable to walk, needing help ect)
I’m not nor do I condone harassment of your friends. I blocked out op in the initial post and they have only ever been directly named as op in private messages-I should note they issued a public apology. It should be noted it’s not like people don’t know who op is-not naming them is a nicety not a necessity-I’m not asking for a parade here I’m reminding you that they’re not entitled to not being held accountable for their actions. They themselves have stated so.
I never said they were ableist-I said the jokes and their actions at the time were. They have since grown and not repeated such behavior to my knowledge. Not being ableist isn’t a one off thing-it’s a choice you make everyday. It’s not for you to decide who is or isn’t ableist. It’s for disabled people to judge-not by your words-but their actions
I ask that you stop sending these in your friends name. I highly doubt they want this and frankly you’re only going to make people think worse of them. They don’t deserve this. If you want to support your friend harassing a disabled person isn’t the way to do it. I do not want to involve them but I will dm them and have them issue another public post if you do not stop. If you care about them please self reflect on the reality of your actions.
Thank you for your time. Have a nice day
