I hadn't seriously felted in a while, so I wanted a new project. And then Efteling started their annual Winter Efteling promo cycle and I was reminded of one of their winter mascots, Pjotr. Pjotr is based on the snowman figures from the Carnaval Festival attraction, and I've always found those really, really cute. So I figured I should try and make one myself! And maybe do a bit better. Because the Pjotr plushies you see in the Efteling, and even the various puppets Efteling has created of him all... lack a bit of definition. The hand and feet of the snowmen Pjotr is based on are all just... blobs. Snowballs, if you want to put it that way. And the puppets I've found on Eftelpedia for instance, where Pjotr does have arms and legs... don't look like they fit in the Carnaval Festival. So, design challenge. The other Carnaval Festival puppets mostly have big, oval feet and four-fingered hands that are ''floating'' (attached via rods, in the attraction) in front of or to the side of the body. Now that, I can do. And if I'm giving a plushie such big feet, well, then I should be able to pose it on those feet, right? So I aimed to have three stable positions to put Pjotr in. IRL, the one where the hat is basically pointing straight up is the most stable one, but he can actually freely stand in all three positions as long as he's properly put on his feet. Figuring out how to attach the hands so it still looks like they're floating was a challenge, and I'm not sure I entirely succeeded -- but it still looks good! I could even shape one hand and attach it in such a way that Pjotr can hold something. He's holding a flower here, but I might make a sprig of mistletoe and give him that :) Another challenge was the hat. I decided to experiment with making a mold for it, and that worked out great -- though I think the hat might still be a bit big, really. But it's cute. Making sure the stripes were straight was another challenge and I'm not sure that one worked out as well. But I love the overall effect.
