Life was great for Ponyboy for a while.

His family lived on the West Side; his dad was a cop, and his mom made homemade food every day. He got good grades just like his oldest brother Darrel, and his middle brother, Sodapop, at least knew he wanted to work on cars.

He had a loyal-to-death best friend, a hood from the East Side named Curly Shepard, Curly and Ponyboy were like oil and water in personality, but Curly had decided to attach himself to Ponyboy the first day they met and has been around ever since.

Sodapop also had a best friend from the East Side, a Greaser named Steve Randle. Steve didn't like Ponyboy at all, even making a point of telling him he couldn't come over for dinner with Sodapop. He said it was because he didn't want to be associated with the Shepards, but Ponyboy knew it was more personal than that.

Curly, who was stands behind his Ponyboy with his arms draped across Ponyboy's shoulders to dampen his excited tremors, watches the two junior Tiger gangsters prowl around Ponyboy like their name-sake, poking for any sign of weakness.

"But they say that Bob tried to drown you. Surely that left some impression, no? Ya sure you ain't scared o' water, Curtis?" Joseph Johnson, a sixteen year old Tiger gang recruit had taunted and Ponyboy is puffing up his chest in a threatening manner, making Curly's excitement amp up even further.

"Yeah, Curtis should go take a swim in the fountain to prove it. Unless he's too chicken?" Shawn Lee, the other sixteen year old Tiger recruit pushed.

Curly is so ready to follow Ponyboy into the fountain and wrestle with these little-

"Absolutely not. Curly I swear ta God I will beat yer ass if either of you two touch that ice ass water." Tim calls out from where he's standing by his mustang, all of them jump and Jester Brumbly nearby cackles loudly at the action.

They continued in silence. Tim noted the blue mustang that circled the block around them. He also watched with amusement as Ponyboy and Cade had one of their famous silent conversations.

"Why are you still here?" Cherry asks after a few minutes, clearly not enjoying the silence.

Tim hummed. "Gotta get Winston's kids home safe, don't I? He ain't never forget it if they got hurt an I coulda helped."

"Weren't you looking to hurt him earlier?" The dark haired girl asked.

"Yeah, but like I said. It's how we show affection. Winston's my best pal. Sides if the kids didn't want me along they woulda told me. Ain't safe bein out this late, never know when Soc's will show up. Ain't you still got that cut on yer neck, Curtis? Winston told me the ones who jumped you had a blade."

Cherry looks shocked, whipping her head to look at Ponyboy who had reached up to run a finger along the bandage. "Yeah, it weren't even dark out yet when they went after me. Was lucky the others were nearby."

Cherry starts spouting some shit about it being rough all over but Tim's attention is pulled to the blue mustang that's creeping back up on them again.

A CRUNCH that makes Randy's arm hairs stand on end has him spinning around in time to watch the small dark boy crumple to the ground, a sickening crimson pool of blood already pouring out from his ears, his horrifically dull eyes seem to stare into Randy's soul.

Dave cheers when the kid- cause he's younger then all of them are- doesn't move again and Randy is swallowing back bile as he reasons that the boy will be fine. He'll wake up in a minute so they need to start splitting if they don't want more trouble.

Randy flinches when Bob and the others cheer again and some distant, more aware, part of his mind registers that the splashing had stopped. That part of his mind recoiling as the others cheer and jostle Randy, feeling like something was very wrong.

He doesn't quite understand what he sees when he looks back towards the now empty fountain- mostly empty. There's something small floating in it, smaller then the boy on the ground in the growing puddle of red- Randy is sick and throws up all over the street, his vision darkening as his friends make disgusted sounds and shake him.

Randy distantly wonders if this is what shock feels like- and thats the last thing he remembers from that night.

"I owe his brother a favor. Till it's clear the baby Curtis is mine to protect."

That's enough for the Brumbly Boys to decide it's not worth the hassle, skittering off like the cockroaches they were. Ponyboy sags in relief, dropping the bottle into the trash can beside him and pressing a hand against his side where Tim can see a already purpling bruise through a hole in the boy's shirt.

"What do you owe my brother for?" Ponyboy asks after a moment of catching his breath.

"I owed Dallas my life, that's carried over to you." Is the answer Tim decides on, pulling Ponyboy closer and leading him out towards the street where his car was parked.

"You've probably saved my life a few times now."

"Yeah well my life is worth more then yours." The words taste like a lie.

"I'm good, Dal's." Ponyboy sits up slowly, Dally taking his arm and helps him get back to his feet, and catching him when his ankle buckles in protest.

"Did good protecting your head kid. C'mon you can take the time to get to Buck's to recover and I'll introduce you."

Ponyboy is in the backseat of the car but he can't help but smile when he hears Tim's comment of "Real tuff kid you got there." From outside the car.

"He's my kid brother. Of course he's tuff."

Darry sighs again for the fifth time since Ponyboy got home. He's practically vibrating. Darry knows all too well what's coming.

It's been awhile since Ponyboy watched the sunset, so he supposes it was only a matter of time before he was itching to drag someone else along to waste time.

Darry almost looked forward to Ponyboy asking him to come with him to the back porch, they hadn't hung out in awhile, what with Darry working three jobs and Ponyboy hanging out with Dally so much. Maybe he could spare a few minutes to go watch the sunset with Ponyboy, if only to ask after his homework.

It'd been awhile since he'd noticed Ponyboy wasn't sitting nearby him to do his school work, instead choosing to drape himself over or be draped over with Dally or Johnny. Darry hadn't said anything because he was still doing good on his school work so far.

The sun is getting low in the sky and Ponyboy is jumping to his feet, his mouth open to ask the expected question- but that's not what happened.
