I just purchased three cacti from a lovely shop, Crystals Garden, in the East Village. The colors are incredibly vibrant, and I want to display them to their best advantage, individually. At first, I tried to find appropriate little pots to set their plastic containers in, but found nothing suitable. Instead, I've decided to knit a delicate cabled wrap to dress up the boring brick-colored plastic squares.
I've seen plant sweaters before, selling for $7-$30 depending on their size. I feel lucky that I know how to make my own, not only because it will save money, but because they are a quick, fun project that's completely customized to suit the already flamboyant look of the cactus—lending a soft, subtle effect while maintaining a touch of whimsy.
I've named my cacti: O'Keeffe (pink), Turrell (yellow), and Ortega (red), after artists who I associate with the American Southwest. I'll keep posting updates on Favourite House, as the project progresses.
