Why I like the Plasmavore

Oops, totally forgot about this one. Alrighty then.

The Plasmavore is the villain from “Smith and Jones,” masquerading as a harmless old lady named Florence Finnegan. As the name might suggest, she sucks blood. Through a straw. (Fun fact, the same actress, Anne Reid, also played Nurse Crane in “the Curse of Fenric,” last seen being overrun by Haemovores. Yay, vampirisim!)

What makes her delightful, apart from really awesome diction, is how much she seems to enjoy the harmless old lady act. She’s very cordial, solicitous even, and does weird quirky things like bringing her own straw. It’s… a bendy straw. Like, that was a gag on the Tick once. It can’t possibly work, what with arterial diameters and the amount of a seal you could get with one of those things. It’s a conceit. Among other things, it tells us that Florence the Plasmavore is the sort of person who gets a kick out of things like sucking people’s blood with a bendy straw. Just cause she can. She really seems to love being what she is, and I always respect that in a villain.

Also, her plan is a pretty good one. Hide out in the hospital, fool the cops, nuke everything, and move on. I was a bit disappointed in her take-down (couldn’t she have, ya know, ducked?) but everything up to that point was very straight-forward and practical. But mostly she was just a lot of fun to watch. And the notion of internal shapeshifting was a kind of cool one (and honestly made more sense here than it does later the same season, but never mind that).

I have to say, too, I really liked her acting. She has such wonderful enunciation. But mostly, all her schtick was very Arsenic and Old Lace, and that’s never a bad thing. Everybody loves murderous sweet little old ladies.
