honestly, id love to continue writing it but i also feel like after such a long delay some people might not want to keep reading anymore, which i completely understand. ill tag everyone from the list, so if you would still be interested in reading when i post the next chapter this week, please let me know. ty sm for all the love and support, it really means a lot!!

Kim Gordon — Play Me (Matador)

Kim Gordon long ago left behind the noisy art-punk of Sonic Youth, exploring textured guitar work as half of Body/Head and increasingly beat-focused music on her solo music. The core sensibilities remain — some anger, some arch considerations, some bleak reportage — informing each piece on her latest record, Play Me. The album continues the experimentation of 2024's The Collective, fighting through the state of our nearly apocalyptic contemporary world with a mix of bass, skittering beats, and fervency. The two records work well as a pair, a twin look at a world in crisis built on anxious production and Gordon's inimitable delivery.

 The retro, jazzy beat of the opening track doesn't point to the distress exposed throughout the album. If Gordon's a little ironic and subversive with “Play Me,” she soon moves into rougher territory. The scattered styles of tracks — trip hop, trap, and more — help Gordon guide us through an increasingly alienated and tech-modified world. The vision turns dystopian, but without moralizing; instead, it feels almost representational, as Gordon critiques but mostly reveals our contemporary world.

Glitchy keystone piece “Dirty Tech” never quite turns explicit, but the message comes through. Gordon's says suggestively, “I love it when you talk dirty tech to me.” The language sounds sexual, but the content looks at the environmental collapse of an AI-based world, with both bosses and “white collar service workers” implicated (if both turn out to be human and not just bots). Gritty “No Hands” builds around the phrase “no hands on the wheel,” as if no one is running anything with control. Gordon sings as one who's given in to the thrill of a pending crash, but the song sounds anything but joyful. We're doomed, and it sounds like an aggressive refrain.

Gordon's vocals remain strong, but Play Me is a jittery record. The brevity of the songs captures the nervous mood, flitting from one worry to another, staying sharply focused for a couple minutes before veering into the next disaster. “Black Out” needs only 100 seconds to cover a wealth of terrain, nodding to Antonioni, referencing Trump, hating AI, acknowledging the destructive force of capitalism and suffering the failure of punk to change the world. And then Gordon moves on.

Her sound primarily matches her most recent work, but there are moments that look further back, as in the guitar-led “Not Today.” The shift in tone at the record's center gives it authority, a motorik beat and a sound that couldn't be mistaken for Sonic Youth, but might at least hearken back a little. The beats return, and Gordon pushes on through a technological wasteland, restless as ever. The record closes with “Byebye25!” The track nods to the opening number of The Collective, and again makes its lyric out of a list. This time she lists words that the Trump administration uses to cut funding, like “Tribal / Transgender / Hispanic / Green.” The messaging by now is about as clear as it gets. Gordon ends her album by saying, “Bye bye,” but it doesn't sound like she's the one going anywhere.
