i'm too tired to write a fic but i'm thinking a lot about josh's military lover and how serious their relationship was and how it might have affected him after returning home

he seemed very happy and upbeat when mentioning him, probably bc his mind only conjured up good memories in the moment, but it makes me think that he didn't lose his lover in combat, bc then his smile would have probably been more sad and not reached his eyes. his expression only fell when wolf brought up "don't ask, don't tell", which maybe triggered some bad memories for him (like getting caught, or perhaps drifting apart upon returning home because his lover was still in the closet)

initially, after watching that scene via the preview clip, i thought that he might have been in a serious relationship in the military, lost his lover in combat, and now has commitment issues - since dustin from abs class sounds like a one night hookup, though that's kinda just my theory. like he chose to stay single upon returning home and only has quick flings now

buuuuut now i'm thinking that maybe the military relationship wasn't super serious, just a fun way to pass time, get off, and enjoy a physical connection with another guy, no real strings attached

but yeah, we've yet to get a true backstory on nichols, or really see much of his personal life outside of work ('cause now we know about carol's marriage issues and a little bit about the residents' personal/mental struggles), so hopefully we'll get some answers soon (teddy said we will see some josh backstory, in ep 7 or 8, i think?)
