I know it’s not ask the inn keeper but I’ve been curious about it for a while, and since the most recent bonus episode I just had to know. Is Tessa aromantic?

My intention is always to portray her as aromantic at least and likely asexual as well, yes! As usual, romance and sexuality is not a focus of this show, but that part I’m doing on purpose.

For the ask game: If you could make a crossover (canon or noncanon) with any other audio drama, what would it be?

I am far from the first person to say this, but it would be wildly fun to toss all our ladies into Killjam XXX and just see how they do.

Obviously Betty and Yak have some major advantages, but I also definitely want to see what kind of stuff Phoebe, Rosie, and Fina get up to. And like, Zara would wreck shop. If it was a Killjam competition between all six of them, I think my money’s on Zara. She would not have the decency to enjoy it however, which is why even if she won, she’d inevitably lose to Faustina.

Who is a character that took you by surprise?

The moment Malcolm Jay started acting as Max, I was like...oh I gotta bring this guy back. Like I had an inkling before that Max might appear again, but the moment Malcolm put voice to him, I was certain he had to be a main character in the next season.

If you are a voice actor or audio editor, what is your favorite blooper moment?

I'm a director, actually! So I hear all the silliness. And...

Okay so, Mason Amadeus is one of the funniest people alive. Somehow while we were recording season five, he got going on this bit about pregnant Sonic the Hedgehog fan art. I don't even remember how it happened. And one thing led to another...

What is an inside joke or reference that is hidden in your podcast?

I am constantly referencing D&D games I have played in the show. Like in the meta of the show, Tessa (and everyone else, for that matter) is played by DM Teresa, who is definitely just me. I hide as many little bits as I can in there. The only one who will ever appreciate them is my buddy Eric, who's one of my players. Shoutout to Eric.

What is an element of your story that surprised you?

I like it when I know exactly what the character archetypes are going to be and then they're like. >:( well now I'm not going to. This happened when I was first writing season three, with Rosie and Zara--I couldn't even get through the first episode without swapping their personalities. Rosie was the cynical one and Zara was the perky chipper witch! It was unbearable. Better that Rosie's name was not ironic, in the end.

Who is a character that took you by surprise?

Every character surprises me at one point or another, but I have to say, I was surprised by how much people loved Velune. I underestimated the cleric lovers and I will not do that again. Shoutout to y'all.

What is an inside joke or reference that is hidden in your podcast?

Whenever Fina talks about a story, she's referencing a real story. Narnia, the Bible, EB White, the Odyssey. In the mini episode with Killiker and Inn Beacween, every time she describes a trope or a plotline, it's a real one--except for in Inn Beacween, when she references a pair of goddesses. That's me and Claudia Elvidge. :)

wanted to know if you had any queer fantasy and/or sci-fi audio drama recommendations. I’ve listened to and loved Welcome To NightVale, Jar Of Rebuke, Absolutely No Adventures, Zoo, The Bright Sessions, and of course, Inn Between. Thanks regardless :]

Yeah I definitely do. I'm actually one of those cishets myself, so just to be absolutely clear, i'm going to include only shows with at least one main character who's not like. You know. One of me. I'm also looking at your selections and noting a sort of steady pacing, respect for exploration, and character focus, so I'll be leaning toward those.

FANTASY

Dragon's Rest is a sitcom in the vein of ANA and Inn Between--a fantasy inn, a grumpy owner, her hapless hero hopeful busboy, the local lush, a bard who, and I cannot stress this enough, is too dumb to read. It's delightful, honestly.

Eeler's Choice is a strange and beautiful oceanic adventure about magic, siblings, and giant eels. The music slaps also.

Electromancy: imagine if Harry Potter was a) not written by a freakin transphobe, and b) actually asked hard questions about imperialism. Like hey, should we be doing imperialism?

The Kingmaker Histories is hard to describe. I can say "steampunk," and "magic" and "magical politics" and "Collette's got a jewel stuck in her head that explodes people sometimes" but that's not even the half of it.

Sidequesting is like, best friends with ANA. Rion, a brave hero, is given a magic sword for an epic quest...and promptly goes and does literally everything else. It's so nice.

Starfall hey what's up Starfall I love you Starfall, Starfall's about a magic theater troupe and definitely not also about how imperialism is bad, actually. Fel and Leona own my whole heart. Friends.

Sci-Fi

Ask Your Father is one of those shows that hits you in the teeth. When an accident sends an astronaut and his AI bestie way off course, he finds himself lost in space, answering questions from his kids and husband that will absolutely break your heart. I cried. A lot.

Gastronaut is near-future sci-fi about a bougie foodie who goes on a journey to discover the food of the Asian diaspora throughout the solar system. And things go...very bad. This show loves food so much and it loves the characters even more.

Midnight Burger is...everything. How do you even describe it. It's hard sci-fi dressed up in a found family package and served with fries. Or maybe beans and rice, if Gloria's cooking. It is a deeply cynical show that nevertheless insists that the universe is worth fighting for, with everything you've got.

The Pasithea Powder is explicitly written for people who like a gritty, uncomfortable, messy romance. Like, did you like Stucky fanfic? So do the writers and it's amazing. The tagline is that a retired fighter pilot/war hero and a disgraced scientist/war criminal used to be best friends. They still might be, if the other one will pick up the phone.

Second Star to the Left is about colonization and xenobiology and the kinds of connections you can make light years away from each other. It's about rules and when it's okay to break them. It's beautiful.

Startripper!! is also very ANA and Inn Between--an accountant decides to ditch his day job, buy the far-future equivalent of a Millennium Falcon replica, and travel the universe for the rest of his life. It's so fun.

The Strange Case of the Starship Iris is like, if Firefly had real Asians in it. It's about a group of space smugglers turned galaxy heroes, and it's absolutely incredible.

Travelling Light is another travelogue, but this one features a person doing archival work for their community and meeting amazing people and hearing amazing stories while they do it. It's so gentle and wonderful.

World Gone Wrong is a chat podcast between two separated roommates who are trying to make sense of the end of the world. Like what do you do with that extra hour in the day now? Is my community going to lose its mind because some of the trees look like women? How can I throw a poetry jam that's inclusive for my werewolf friends? It's so well crafted and well acted. I think about it every day.

Extremely important question.

Max: something something Civet something Oat Milk something Triple Shot something Extra Pumps. It's expensive for no reason and not very good. Max swears by it, but we all know he's an unreliable narrator.

Yak: the most sumptuous cup of cocoa that can be had. She'll settle for simple, but if there's a fancy hot chocolate to be had, they're having that, with whipped cream and sprinkles. If it's dark chocolate, all the bitter better.

Phoebe: She asks for a red eye and she doesn't blink. She asks for it with an extra shot, which I believe is called a black eye? Caffeine does not faze her. She gets to decide when sleep happens, not her body. It's not healthy at all.

Larkin: He is a giant iced coffee girlie, which is terrible both for his stomach and his nerves. If he is ordering alone, he'll get something like a nice chai latte. If he's not, he needs to save face.

Rukes: black coffee, one sugar. Milk is for people with time. And patience.

so there's this guy who drives trains for a living. one day, he's driving really fast and hits a turn, overturning on the rails. this causes a crash and one of he passengers die. he's held in court, and after a long and grueling session, he's found guilty and sentenced to death, via the electric chair. he lives out his prison sentence, and on the day of his death, asks for 1 (one) banana. he gets it, enjoys it, and continues on. he's strapped to the chair, and the switch is flipped

well, the man survived

now, in this town, if you survive the electric chair, you're considered some sort of saint and you get to go free. so, he gets his job back with the trains. he, however, did not learn his lesson and once again took a turn too fast, overturning and killing one of his passengers. his court hearing is not as long, but just as conclusive: he will die via electric chair. for his last meal this time, he orders 2 (two) bananas, and eats them. he's strapped to the chair, and the switch is flipped

well, the man survived again

somehow, someway, he gets his job back with the trains. you know the story, a lesson not learned, a life forever lost. he's found guilty and once again sentenced to death. this time, he orders THREE bananas for his last meal. "fuck you," says the electrocutioner, "i'm not having you survive again" and straps the man in without his bananas

well, the man survives.

the man says, "what, did you think it was because of the bananas? no, i'm just a poor conductor"

Regrettably, I cannot accept this joke as an entry to our joke contest, but I think it's so good it deserves to be seen.
