4cr Plays - Olympia Rising

Olympia Rising from developer Paleozoic Games and publisher PlayEveryWare (who brought us the excellent Elliot Quest on Wii U). In this one, you take on the role of Iola, a young warrior who has been unfairly cast into the depths of the Underworld after her death. The only way out of there is up, and there are thousands of monsters in the path that leads to Mt. Olympus. Hades won’t allow Iola to exit his realm, so it’s up to players to make the most of her strengths to destroy anyone who stands in her way.

The game’s controls are very simple. You move around with either the left analog stick or the D-pad, jump with either the A or the Y button (and double jump by hitting either button once more while in the air) and attack with the B or X button. On top of this, you can hold down either jump button to fly thought the air, as long as you time it right so that your momentum doesn’t send you into a dangerous hazard… oh, and if and only if you have enough magic for it! That’s all there is to it, and this simple approach will allow you to focus on the action at all times. You can also read the scrolls that rest on pedestals by pressing down on the analog stick. You’ll also be able to use magic spells you find to attack your enemies, and these are activated by pressing down on the analog stick or D-pad while hitting an attack button.

The game starts at the Asphodel Fields, in the realm of eternal rest, right at the edge of Hades. A minute later you’ll get to meet Charon, who will tell you that he can allow you to pass… for the right price. You’ll need to collect Obulus coins as you go to be able to pay Charon the Ferryman to continue towards safety, so be sure to chain as many kills as you can so that you can get a big combo to reward you with extra coins! The bottom right corner of the screen will show you how many coins you have and how many are needed to pass, so be sure to always check that! The first time you meet Charon, he will ask for only five coins, which won’t be hard at all. But as soon as you pay him he’ll let you know the next toll is 30 coins, which means that every time you meet him, he’ll ask for even more coins!

Olympia Rising mixes things up by throwing some autoscroll sections at you every now and then. Unlike the regular platforming levels where you can just take your time to find all the coins and break all jars to fill your magic bar or to recover your health, during autoscroll sections you must always move upwards or else the rising flames will consume your soul.

The game uses a password system, so be sure to write down the weird symbols that are available in each pedestal that has a floating P on top so that you can continue your adventure on the last level you played! This is important considering that if you reach Charon without enough coins to pay the toll, you’ll be sent back to redo the last level you played, so you might want to rest for a bit before taking on the same level again.

You’ll also end up running into nasty bosses that will test your skills. Nothing says “be ready” like a mighty Cyclops that won’t stop trying to destroy you, using his massive body, his magical eye beam or his minions to damage you. Defeating a boss will reward you with an extra heart, which is always nice since having an extra hit makes a big difference in your quest.

I had a lot of fun playing Olympia Rising. The game certainly does not hold your hand, and even though it’s a short game it is a great looking and interesting release that does not overstay its welcome. Sure, there’s some slow down here and there on the more crowded levels, but it is not a deal-breaker since it never got in the way. You can probably finish it in around 3 to 5 hours depending on your skill. If you like a good challenge then I recommend you get Olympia Rising on Wii U.
