Dragons AU

Part 1

@valyrra, thank you for inspiring me to finally write it all down. before I get into it, it is not very original as I initially came up with all of this years and years ago when I was still a teen, and it does take a lot of inspiration from different works of fiction (quite obviously, GW2, rage of bahamut, the wheel of time, record of lodoss war, homestuck, and many, many more). it is a setting for an ultimate mary sue story (what do you expect really? I was a lonely child with imaginary friends), main characters have no names and no established physical appearances and rather represent concepts of what I wanted to be during different stages of growing up, I guess

The World

Ancient dragons are the force of nature, they are not good or evil but rather these chaotic neutral creatures that represent the everchanging and uncaring nature of the universe.

There are five dragons, each one representing one of the godai elements: earth, water, fire, wind, and void. They exist in a fluid state of volatile balance. When one of the elements begins to dominate the others, it inevitably leads to calamities closely related to this particular element (massive wildfires, floods, volcanic eruptions, and so on). While ancient dragons exist in balance and are not interested in dominating one another or overtaking all the power (at least, most of the times), the cults that worship them do.

The main idea of the ancient dragons being a force of nature is that sometimes destruction is necessary for renewal.

The descendants of the ancient dragons, known as dragonfolk have the ability to shapeshift into humans. While some of them choose to live among humans, the vast majority prefers to stay in segregated communities among other dragonfolk. They are mostly friendly to humans.

The Magic

The magic in this world comes from the ancient dragons, naturally, and it is divided in five elements, which can be combined to create new types of magic. For example, a wielder of Earth magic might be also proficient in Fire magic, therefore creating magma spells. It is extremely rare for anyone to master more than two elements, though, especially the opposing ones. It is easier to master Earth + Fire manipulation, or Air + Water, and it gets progressively harder once you add a third element into it, with Void being the most difficult one to master.

Void represents nothingness, empty space, level zero, the end but also the beginning of life. It is believed that one who wields all five elements has the power to summon the Ancients from the Ether and bring the next big calamity to restart the cycle. However, the individual like that haven't been seen or heard of for many, many centuries (if ever), and is believed to be nothing but a thing of legends.

As ancient dragons are not gods and do not involve themselves in measly affairs of those beneath, they do not grant powers based on faith. Magic comes naturally, whether it is desired or not, and it is up to an individual to develop and strengthen these powers (or not). For example, a very far removed descendant of one of the ancient dragons can be a seemingly normal human, but still might have a very strong disposition for magic. At the same time, there are also those who might wish to master the certain type of magic while not having that much of a "spark" inside them, but are determined enough to dedicate their whole life to study.

The difference between these two types of people is that the ones with the innate magical abilities, also known as "naturals" are much rarer and unless they invest into cultivating their abilities, are less powerful than those who spent night and day honing their magic (it is 10% talent and 90% hard work, after all).

Once in a while, there is a chosen one - usually a human, who possesses outstanding magical powers and has immense potential. These individuals are believed to be either harbingers of doom by those who fear and reject magic or heralds of great changes.

The Conflict

There are two major opposing points of view that developed through the centuries. There are those who see the ancients–and by extension, everyone else who wields magic or possesses even minimal magical abilities,–as a major threat to all life. This "anti-magic" faction believes in material, technology, and iron. Their ultimate goal is to "tame" and, if unsuccessful, eliminate the ancients.

And then there are the borderline religious fanatics with the opposing view that those with magic should rule over everything.

Between these two extremes, stretches a gradient scale of different opinions and world views, some more peaceful than the others.

And then there are the Followers of the Void.

The Characters

The Followers of the Void believe that the current state of the world is inadequate, tainted, that it needs to be wiped out clean to give a better, fertile ground for the new one, to be cleansed of sin and rebuilt anew. The cult is led by the current Chosen One, who initially wielded the powers of the Void Ancient Dragon (void manipulation, nullifying effects, manipulating dark matters, mostly destructive powers). However, through the years, he managed to master Wind and Fire elements as well.

Known as the Prince of Void, Herald of Destruction, he has been alive for centuries. The nihilistic view on life, combined with uncountable number of times he was disappointed by humans around him and how flawed their world in general and political structures are, eventually led him to the creation of the cult.

Suffers a very obvious case of the god complex, with his catch-phrase being "I am the end and I am the beginning". His ultimate goal is to master and combine all five magical elements–which no one has done before–and quite literally nuke the world into the new age, the one that he will mold to his liking.

Back in the days, when he was not completely out of his goddamn mind, he was very highly regarded as one of the most powerful mages of his time, but as centuries passed and he removed himself from the high-so scene of royalty and politics, his whole existence turned into an urban legend, while the cult in his name kept growing.
