The biggest volcano on Earth rivals Olympus Mons
Reports in this week's Nature Geoscience journal claim to have identified the largest single volcano on Earth. Using a combination of geophysical surveying, employing seismometers to image the subsurface structure of the Pacific ocean floor, alongside direct sampling of the crust by the Ocean Drilling Program drill cores, scientists from USA, Japan, and UK suggest that the Tamu massif, on the floor of the North West Pacific ocean, is in fact a huge submarine volcano. The Tamu Massif sits on a feature called the Shatsky rise, a large submarine plateau with an area similar to that of the state of California. It is dated at around 145 Myr old, and when it formed it would have stood at a triple junction of sea-floor plates.
The authors of the paper suggest that the feature is an immense "shield" volcano, formed from massive lava flows which would have flowed rapidly along its shallow slopes to create a broad-based but voluminous volcano. It is hundreds of miles across, and is the size of New Mexico.
This makes it comparable with Olympus Mons, a shield volcano on Mars, which is thought to be the largest volcano in the solar system.
The naming of Tamu Massif has its own story: the Massif is named after Texas A&M University, the home institution of the lead author of the study, William Sager.

People say that Trnava is the Vatican of Slovakia. What people?! Well, people who have never been to the Vatican.
I've been having some doubts about Montréal being very European as I think it isn't. But who am I to judge, especially after ten weeks I've been here anyway. But this past weekend I had some interesting experiences and observations.
I honestly need a ton of inspiration! I was down to 140 and now I'm almost back up to 170 I'm out of control and it's killing me I'm so depressed I keep telling myself I will start running and eating healthy again but I'm telling myself lies..
Your dream doesn’t have an expiration date. Take a deep breath and try again. I felt the same only a few weeks ago as nothing seemed to be going right like anymore and one day I literally broke down as I was running. The pressure I was putting on myself was ridiculous as I was panicked I had gone from 168 to the high 180's again in such a short amount of time. I felt defeated and had incredible shame as if I had let failed myself... do you think anyone cared but me? No. The more I dwelled in my mistakes the more they felt more real in my head and I doubted myself if I could ever lose the weight again. Oh course I can but sometimes your negative thoughts can convince you that the sky is green so one day I decided to wake up and simply start over and I know call this point in my journey Part 2. You can try so hard and give this lifestyle change everything you got until one day the scale stops moving and you feel like your failing. The last thing you should do is make that scale your worst enemy because the reality is that your weight is just a number and doesn't show the true story. I’ve lost 110lbs but somedays I don’t feel any different then the 283 person I used to be. “Perfect” doesn’t exist and no one, not even fitness cover models eat perfectly or do everything right. If I gave up when I hit my plateau at 185 I wouldn’t be where I am right at this very moment. The last thing you want to do is give up! Loss of motivation is often from setting goals that are unrealistic. If you keep getting off track, revisit why your on this journey and reevaluate. Make a vision board and put it near your bed so your goals are the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing before you go to sleep. You can totally do this…just have a little patience and faith in the process!
WIW
Starting Weight (1/18/2012): 355+ lbs
Last week (9/5/2012): 294.6 lbs
Current weight (9/12/2012): 296.4 lbs
ANOTHER 2 POUNDS!?!?
Obviously I'm stuck again. With this and last weeks gain I've erased a month's worth of work and at this rate I'll be back up over 300 by the end of the month.
Not much else to say. I dunno what to do.
To tackle this plateau situ I upped my cardio from 400cals on the elliptical/day to 300 cals split between bike and treadmill, plus 200 on the elliptical, doing 30 second speed intervals, and one final 100 cals on the elliptical watching tv show of choice.
That's a boost of 200 calories burned. Also I dont know if my amr is 1730 or 1650, so I'm using the lower one now, which is just a 200 calorie intake deficit.
My body wont knoww what's up. And this should bust through the plateau pretty quick.
I'll let ya know :P
