Cece Drake, -A Has Trust Issues, and Why Mona Was Actually“Playing” Cece in the Dollhouse Prom Scene - 3x07 Analysis and Theories
3x07 “Crazy” was a fun episode for sure! We are introduced to Cece Drake for the first time, Aria doesn`t let a friend sneak into a mental asylum alone, and we get one of the most memorable Mona scenes ever.
Prom Queen Cece Drake and Why Her Necklace Might Be a Clue
The liars run into Cece Drake at a coffee shop. She sounds like Ali, she looks like Ali, and when she looks at you it`s like she looks right through you, just like Ali used to do. She might as well be Ali`s twin.
I`m immediately suspicious of Cece because she seems to know a lot about the girls while they`ve never even heard of her before. To this day I`m not quite sure why Ali kept Cece a secret. I mean, the liars, Ali, and Cece even went to the same party once - remember the frat party? The one the liars got into using fake IDs and they saw that girl fall down the stairs? Cece had to have been at the same party because later she was blamed for pushing the girl down and got thrown out of UPenn for it.
Another thing about Cece, did you notice her octagon necklace? Doesn`t it remind you of something?
3x13 —> Ali`s hands sticks out of the ground. OCTAGON.
4x19 —> Aria sits in a bar and makes a shape out of toothpicks. OCTAGON.
Same shape. What could that mean?
One more thing. Spencer gets her hands an on old yearbook and guess what she finds out - Cece was a prom queen. It didn`t mean much to me back then, but with the whole prom thing happening in the season 5 finale, doesn`t it strike you as odd that Charles wanted Ali aka Mona to be crowned as the prom queen at his fake prom?
Charles was recreating Melissa and Ian`s prom, which also was Cece`s prom, and Cece was voted prom queen back then. So by crowning Mona, wasn`t Charles actually making her play the part of Cece and not Ali?
What Did Spencer Put in Ali`s Grave?
All four girls put something in “Ali`s” casket before it was buried. Aria - the earrings. In this episode we find out that Hanna put in a planchette, the thing you slide around a Ouija board. Later we also learn that Emily put in over 20 different postcards. So here is one of the hundreds of unanswered PLL questions I have - what did Spencer put inside “Ali`s” casket and why was it never brought up? And will it become important in season 6? I`d love to know.
Spencer Being Supportive and The Bad Break-Up
Every time I see a scene like this one I can`t help but think of Spencer and Charles meeting up at the vault. This is yet another instance where Jason feels down and beats himself up, but Spencer, being his half-sister and a compassionate soul assures him that he`s not as bad as he thinks he is. Seriously, there is not a single character on this show that loves Jason as much as Spencer does. And if Jason was -A it would kinda explain why he didn`t attack Spencer while they were face to face inside that creepy vault. Just sayin`.
Spencer is curious about Cece and she asks Jason about their break up. She wants to know if it ended on a bad note and he says “You can say that.” Later, in one of the “Pretty Dirty Secret” webisodes Jason runs into Cece at the Halloween store and reveals that Cece broke up with him the day after Ali disappeared and she never explained why she did it. What happened between those two? I`d like an explanation, please :)
Mona is Not In Control and the Children`s Ward
Aria comes to Radley to essentially interrogate Mona. She wants to know if Mona is the one torturing Hanna. Mona says that it isn`t her, and you know what? I believe her. I think at this point Mona knows that -A is listening, which will be proven at the end of the episode, so she can`t just go and say “There is another -A, he stole the game from me and he makes me do things I might not want to do, but I`m not in charge anymore.” All she can do without getting herself in trouble, is say this —>
She clearly doesn`t want -A to hurt Hanna, but it`s out of her control.
Also notice the “Queen of Hearts” card in-between them. That`s got to be foreshadowing. A ‘Queen of Hearts” is going to stick Aria in a box in the near future and she doesn`t even know it.
The Children`s Ward scene was fascinating. First of all, why would an institution like Radley need to have a children`s ward to begin with? Were patients keeping their babies here? Was this where they kept small children who were believed to be mentally unstable? Could Charles or Bethany or both have stayed here when they were younger? Did Aria stay here when she was younger?
Love Aria`s face in this scene. She`s like “Mona, I know you`re crazy and all, but what the hell are you saying right now?” :DDD
The liars figure out that this phrase and the other phrases Mona says mean something else. Like “No One To Save Ali From Evil” actually stands for “NOT SAFE”. Again, another clue that -A is listening to their every word and Mona can`t tell them a thing without putting them AND herself in danger.
Still, I find Mona`s decision to come up with “Miss Aria, You`re a Killer. Not Ezra`s Wife” brilliant and creepy at the same time. How could Mona have known that in the future Aria was going to kill a girl (miss Aria you`re a killer) and end up breaking up with Ezra (not Ezra`s wife…. Well, at least not yet anyway). Either the writers had already planned Aria`s story line out or whatever Mona is saying in this scene is just a lucky coincidence.
Also, Mona tells them that “Maya Knew”. What did Maya know? Maya moved into Ali`s house and found a bunch of Ali`s things. Plus Ali had hiding places all over the house. What if one of those things had to do with either Bethany or Charles? Maya wanted to show Emily something important but Lyndon James killed her before she could do so. But yeah, the question remains, what did Maya know?
Oh yeah, and here is why Mona couldn`t talk freely. At the end of the episode we see a black hoodie, presumably -A, twist off a doll`s head and pull out a voice recorder. He`s been recording Mona and the liars` conversation this whole time. Creep! This might also mean that although he allows Mona to carry out some of the -A missions, he also doesn`t fully trust Mona. He knows how smart Mona is, so he`s probably scared that she`ll trick him and steal the game back.
Other Tidbits …
We get a closeup of a few books in Aria`s room.
”Straitjacket & Tie” - a book about a 16-year old boy named Bert whose brother has a psychotic breakdown. Eventually Bert starts talking to a bunch of aliens, so it`s possible that he`s not fully mentally stable either.
“The Death of an Irish Lover” - crime novel about a picturesque town where bad things happen.
“Death by Pantyhose” - a story about a freelance writer who tries to solve a murder.
Mental issues and crime. Two things you can find in most “Aria is -A” or “Aria is Up To No Good” theories.
Also, there is Ted. He eats ice cream. And leaves a mound of ice cream in the middle just like Aria`s father does which turns Ella off and this ends up being their first and last date ever. And then Ella ends up falling for baker boy Zac who seems to be the perfect guy…until he turns out to be the biggest duchebag who hits on underage girls. But that`s a different story for a different blog post…
So back to Ted. In the previous episode, 3x06, we saw black hoodie eat something that looked like either frozen yogurt or ice cream. In this episode we`ve got Ted. As I was saying in my previous post, I think that the black hoodie could`ve been Toby, but this is still an interesting connection between -A activity and Ted. I said this before and I`ll say it again, I used to in the past, but now I can no longer trust someone as perfect as Ted. He`s got to be hiding something. For all we know he could be Charles` father or even Charles himself. Cause really, what do we know about Pastor Ted?
He`s a pastor.
He`s divorced.
He had enough money laying around to pay off Ashley`s bail, and he was supposedly away building schools for underprivileged kids before he came back to Rosewood and proposed to Ashley.
I don`t know, something`s not right here.
What are your thoughts on Ted the Pastor?
