Pokemon Card of the Day #2451: PlusPower (Base Set)
While PlusPower had some reprints throughout the Diamond & Pearl era and in the Black & White set, its biggest moment was its original print in the Base Set. It played the same in the early days as well, being a Trainer that you attached to your Active Pokemon then discarded at the end of your turn. If an attack from the Pokemon it was attached to did damage to the Defending Pokemon, that attack did 10 more damage after Weakness and Resistance were applied. One thing to note here is that there was a slight translation error, as the wording applied that only damage done to the Defending Pokemon was affected. If a Pokemon attacked with something that had recoil damage, such as Arcanine using Take Down, the recoil damage was also meant to be boosted. This was done correctly in the video game for the TCG and was assumed wrong by most of us here, but has turned out to be correct.
PlusPower was quite strong in the early days. Pokemon didn’t have extremely high HP back then, and this along with weaker attacks meant that it was much more common to have a Pokemon survive with 10 HP left. The most famous example of this was with Wigglytuff, as a Do the Wave with a full Bench did 60 damage. Many popular Pokemon, including Mewtwo, Scyther, Electabuzz, Magmar, and Hitmonchan had 70 HP, and a PlusPower was enough to get that KO. 2 Scyther Slashes with a PlusPower on one of them reached 70 as well, and 2 Hitmonchan Jabs with a single boost could deal with Lickitung. Mew’s Psywave with a PlusPower was notable for a KO on Mewtwo, and Rattata could use this to be a way to deal with Ditto. PlusPower had all sorts of uses and was worth fitting into many decks in the earliest formats in the game.
For Christmas, I wish my Plus Queens would not put themselves down, especially to or in front of others. Don't say things like.. " I'll never find a man cause I'm a Big Girl." or " I will never find anything to fit me because I'm a Big Girl." You are speaking that garbage into your life. You have to stop. I know sometimes its hard... but don't speak those words ever again. Speak good things over yourself. We teach people how to treat us by the way we treat ourselves. Merry Christmas Queen. You are @fullfiguredfierce OWN THAT SHIT!!! .. #isaidwhatisaid #PlusEmpowermentWeek #livingmypluslife #pluspower #lanebryant #torrid #ashleystewart #styleandcurve (at Huntsville, Alabama) https://www.instagram.com/p/BryHJI-g621/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=bcsjx002q26
