When I was back home last weekend and played some TES PnP RPG, we converted and used the Unofficial Elder Scrolls RolePlaying Game, 3rd Edition for the first time after I had initially came across it. Luckily for me it’s heavily based on Dark Heresy which was my first proper foray into tabletop RPGs and what I had used as basis for my own home brew system that we have used for the last 8 years. I’m getting side-tracked...
Part of that system is that a character can get negative traits and be rewarded extra experience points. Since all my players have established characters already I didn’t want them to go nuts. But Cedran, that semi-crippled, partially illiterate, youthfully naive boy from a witch coven in High Rock got stacked!
About three hours into the first session of the weekend Cedran’s player asks me if he can create or even use spell scrolls now that he’s officially illiterate. I instantly came to think of this exchange from Pirates of the Caribbean.
