Directional Witchcraft
The idea of a pocket compass has stuck with me for the better part of a year now. I pictured an item that looks like a fancy pocket watch but is only a compass. I have mentioned this item in conversation to friends, family, and even strangers. I knew one day I would find it.
There’s a simple purpose for this compass: to look at it in moments of life that I feel are particularly important or vague and tell what direction I’m facing. I know that each direction has its own meaning and I would like to decipher the combination of present moment experiences and associations of direction. I could easily do this with my phone, I know, but I like a more enchanting method. So a pocket compass is perfect.
I recently took my first plane ride at 22 years old on my first trip to England from America. I came to visit family and meet some relatives for the first time! I went with my cousin to Whitby and we popped into an antique shop. And there it was. The compass was right in front of me.
I’m in love with this gorgeous little thing!
Now I have the delightful opportunity to advance my own understanding of magic and practice this method of directional witchcraft.
I’m already brewing with ideas for how to use it.
I am going to play around with feeling lost or ungrounded and find out exactly which degree I need to turn in order to feel more at ease.
If I am ruminating over the past I believe I will only need to turn 180 degrees to find a more hopeful and future-oriented outlook.
If I’m worrying about the future I will turn 90 degrees to find a sense of presence.
I need to experiment with these hypotheses to confirm whether those degrees of turning actually work for the intended purpose but I believe I’m on the right track.
