a/n: it’s a little short and not rlly angst sorry

starting a relationship with asahi was like learning to ride a bike without training wheels for the first time. slow and a bit scary.

now, about two weeks into dating, the two of you walked throughout the mall, window shopping and just chit chatting.

“we’ve got a few minutes ‘til the movie starts, right?” you peered, eyeing a few cute outfits but not really stopping to get a better look at them.

you and asahi were suppose to see a movie at the theatre that was attached to the mall. he nodded, looking down at his watch and then back to you.

he noticed that your gaze had shifted, now looking towards another couple, walking hand in hand. he also noticed that the two you weren’t holding hands.

asahi gulped, wondering if you felt weird that he got so shy when it came to showing affection in public. he could see the longing in your eyes and took a deep breath.

“asahi, babe? are you okay? your face is all red.” you pointed out, out of concern. your eyebrows creased and he shook his head.

“can i, hold your hand?” you stopped, blinking at him and laughed. he’d gotten all flustered for sure a small act. but of course you nodded, letting your hand slip into his.

you smiled at his rosy cheeks, giving his hand an tight reassuring squeeze. though, you didn’t want to stop teasing him right that minute.

“do you think i could get a kiss too?” it was just the beginning of the relationship and he didn’t have to. he looked at you, face identical to a tomato and nodded.

you hadn’t excepted him to actually kiss you but he leaned it, peaking your lips softly.

a good thing about learning to ride your bike, is that once the training wheels are gone, and you’ve had a bit of practice, it’s not as scary.

you thought you never wanted to see him again. that after that fight the two of you had which resulted in your taking your things and leaving— you thought after that you’d be repulsed by seeing him again.

it’s only now, seeing tuffs of his grey hair idely standing around the fruit section of the grocery store, that you heart began to beat a familiar rythme.

the words that were thrown that night were hazy memories and as you watched him carefully inspect each apple he put into a plastic bag you remembered how much effort he put into everything.

so much time had passed, whatever the two of you fought about didn’t even matter to you. you stood there frozen, hoping they didn’t matter to him either.

“koshi?” your voice was weary, making sure it was him and not some ghost. his head tilted up, eyes widening when he saw your figure.

“y/n?” he was in the same disbelief. he’d almost forgotten about the apples and made his way over to you. every step he took made you hold onto the grocery basket even tighter. you nodded.

“yeah! hi, how are you?” he asked, looking at you with a new found wonder. the glimmer in his eye when the two of you were together was still somewhat there, making butterflies erupt in your stomach.

“good, good. i have a work party so i just came to pick up something to bring.” you motioned to the vegetable platter in the basket.

sugawara nodded, he would have never thought he’d see you again. never thought his heart would still beat this strong for something who he’d let slip away.

then maybe you should just leave. his words were anything but kind, he could still remember your face when you stormed off and didn’t come back. looking at your face now, you were different, older— more mature.

“maybe you need... a plus one to that work party.” he shrugged sheepishly looking away. testing the water to see if you were still single and willing to give him a second shot.

your lips twitched into a smile; “yeah, yeah i think i would.”
