Podarcis transtlates into arched-foot or bow-foot, while siculus means Sicilian (coming from Sicily, a part of Italy).
Family: Lacertidae (Wall Lizards)
Fun Fact: There are a few different subspecies, and this can be seen through island biogeography (that animals change morphologically, ad/or their behaviors by being isolated on separate islands with different environmental factors). This STUDY, shows how a few breeding pairs of Italian wall lizards that were introduced by man to a neighboring island in the Adriatic Sea changed (through natural selection) over the course of only 50 years.
Habitat: They are endemic to Mediterranean scrub and grasslands of Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, and islands such as Sicily, Corisca, and Sardinia. They are invasive in Spain, Turkey, and the United States.
Ecosystem Role: They help control insect and invertebrate populations. They provide food for snakes, and birds of prey.
Conservation Status: Least Concern
