It is so crazy to think A Weekend in the Country was never supposed to happen on Dawson’s Creek, especially considering what a turning point it is in the season. It was initially going to be called The Ice Storm, where the gang gets stuck in the school overnight because of snow.

Pacey would still have his feelings realization, but it would be after he and Joey get stuck in the storage room and Joey wakes up in his arms (it was repurposed in season 4 with Drue and Joey if that sounds familiar).

And while that would have been all good and fine, it’s … so typical? So done before? So non specific. So dependent on forced proximity and touching. Where Weekend in the Country is so pure. How comments from people who have known real, true, love, wake him up. From Mitch’s remarks to Grams’ story about her marriage, he starts to put the pieces together. And because it’s all done so beautifully, all we need is a shot of him watching her sleep to understand not only Paceys feelings, but the fact that the entire show was about to change in big ways.
