I’m overdosing on T-Swift y’all. This happens every two years. She releases a new album and then I get sucked into it and back into her older albums as well. So…..it’s after lunch and I don’t GAF about work, so I present my ranking of her albums.
This album has the distinction of having literally the T-Swift song that I literally play over and over and over and over. The song is All Too Well btw. This album has ballads that drag a little but the sheer variety of songs makes its’ her strongest. And even though it’s unclear whether or not it’s nominally a country or a pop album [who cares?] I think it’s pretty clear it’s her first ADULT album. All’s about that shit. ALSO TAYLOR IS SO OBSESSED WITH SCARVES Y’ALL. SCARVES THAT REMIND PEOPLE OF INNOCENCE.
Fav tracks: State of Grace, Red, I Knew You Were Trouble, All Too Well, Stay Stay Stay, The Lucky One.
Songs that I skip/hate: Sad Beautiful Tragic certainly drags doesn’t it?
Bonus video of this lovely performance of Red from the CMA’s last year (otherwise known as T-Swift’s farewell song to listening to crappy country music and pretending like she was into that SHIT.)
Y’all I struggled hard about putting this album at #2 or not because it’s so damn new. But I respect it’s ambition and audacity and her trying something new and a little less maudlin (in general). But it has some DAMN GOOD tracks that make me literally wanna dance around my apartment and some hilarious lyrics. Not your best music T-Swift but you throwing some hilarious lyrical shade GIRL.
Fav tracks: Blank Space, Style, Shake It Off, Wildest Dreams [this one is a grower], Clean, New Romantics [this is the song that makes me wanna like dance until I fall over.]
Songs that I skip/hate: I was expecting more venom from Bad Blood? And How You Get The Girl is lame-o.
I basically decided between #3 and #4 based on how much I listened to the respective albums. I had only kinda paid attention to countrifed T-Swift before this (Damn does that girl only wear sundresses and cowboy boots?), but this was album that I heard the entirety of. Girlfriend likes kissing in the rain, cute rhymes, and hooky bridges. SOLD. This is also the last album that Taylor’s vocals were super twangy at times. (Listen to the way she sings FEAR-less). Basically I listened to this album taking lots of walks, and sang along in the shower super loudly. High praise indeed.
Fav songs: Fearless, Fifteen (nice mention of your friend Abby losing her v-card at 15 Tay-Tay), White Horse, You Belong To Me, OMG everytime I listen to that song she wrote for her Mom- The Best Day I fucking bawl. Childhood memories yo.
Bonus video: Now you get to enjoy crying about you Mom too!
I ultimately think this is her next-to-last weakest album because it employs lyrical tropes and “hey gotcha” songwriting while some of good, even great (Dear John) others songs that employ similar tactics (Better Than Revenge, Innocent) are kinda morally superior and whiny. This album is of note though because she wrote ALL the songs herself, which I think trumps other ‘pop’ songwriters that employ like 4-5 songwriters and give themselves songwriter credit. (ahem, sorry Bey). There are some really good songs on here, but there are lot of annoying ones.
Fave tracks: Mine (You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter.”), Sparks Fly, Back To December, Dear John, [This song SOUNDS LIKE A JOHN MAYER SONG WHILE EVISCERATING HIM. SO AMAZING!], Ours, Mean
Songs to Skip/Hate: Better Than Revenge, Innocent, Speak Now.
5.
Oh there is loads of teenage sass and questionable fashion choices of this T-Swift era. But amongst the glittery guitar and weird outfits is why the girl got a published/songwriting deal at 14. Girl can write a song. So sassy, fake country accent, but still it has some songs I enjoy that hold up.
Fav songs: Tim McGraw (GENIUS FIRST SINGLE), Picture To Burn, Teardrops on My Guitar, Should’ve Said No, Our Song.
Songs I skip/hate The literal rest of the album. I’ve never downloaded the whole album. I don’t think I’m missing much. Am I?
Bonus video: Enjoy all the sass and questionable 2000s fashion.
Awesome! I vomited out a nonsense Tumblr post and wasted about an hour! And now I prolly look CRAAAAAZY.
