A new record. :D
POISON (2014 - dir. Christopher Jayawardena)
As stated many times before, this was our most ambitious short film we've attempted. A violent action-packed drama set before Downcast, I hope you guys enjoy it!
I worked my ass off on this, as writer, director, editor, camera operator, props manager, VFX artist, post-audio mix, and even did some of the music myself in Garageband. Phew. Never doing that again. Ever. :D
Will hopefully be giffing this soon, too.
I think Poison's done.
At least, close enough I could call it done. I could upload it now and not regret it. There's a few things I'd like to change, a few bits of sound, maybe add some music to Frank's cameo... but I think overall, it's at a point it's viewable, enjoyable.
This past week has been a marathon. I would occasionally nap for about 30-40 minutes, sometimes crashing for many hours at time, just doing my best to stay awake and do what I could. Every single process took longer than anticipated. I was going to do the flame effect in one night, it took three. But when it was done, it was the best effect I'd ever done for a VFX shot. The audio took two days longer than anticipated because some necessary foley was required. The other night, my dad stayed up until 7 in the morning getting that, and music for the end title sequence. I didn't sleep until around 2 or 3pm that day.
Wait, that was yesterday. Shit. I've lost track of time.
And oh God, the end title sequence... I thought it'd be a cake walk, forgetting that the last time I'd done a sequence like it, it took me about 4 weeks. (and I collaborated with three other people) What I thought would be 3 hours of work turned into closer to 10. The program kept crashing and it would further frustrate me. This is even after I started doing more minimalist versions compared to the bigger effects done to the main cast members.
This is easily the most complex short film we've done, by a long shot. From script to screen, every process has taken an amazingly high amount of mental effort and continuous working to get it done. And as best as it could be, for that matter.
But in the end, I can still say, this is finally, at last, a live action film that feels like one of my own films. Downcast itself was rushed by its schedule, written by a whole bunch of people, and a clunky learning process. Poison, though set in its universe, is more specifically a Christopher Jayawardena film. It is brutal, it is bittersweet, and it has that cheesy sentimentality crossed with fantastical action that I've been writing since I was eleven.
I know I can fix it to be better. I intend to look into getting the VFX and score redone by professionals for the DVD release.
For now? I'm happy with it. I'm proud of it.
I'm compressing the version that will go on YouTube now. I'll be passing it to my father and he'll hopefully review it and let me know if it's time.
Stay tuned. And thank you all for the support you've given me. And, well, being patient with my being an asshole when this stuff gets to me. >_>
Down to the wire. O_O
Meep.
The score isn't finished, the audio still has holes, and I have no time to do my supercool end title sequence. Argh. :|
24 hours to go before I have to just "call it done."
Wish me luck. >_<
(I guess on the bright side, this means I'll have reason to create a "Director's Cut" - hiring people to do better music and better VFX for the DVD/blu version)
Poison's 70% done.
The music/sound is the last thing to do but VFX are finished. The flame gag is the best effect I have ever done. Blows away what was done in Ride Home and Downcast, easily.
Audio's going to be tricky, especially since I have 36 hours to pull all this together before final compile. First couple of passes are done, but a lot of gaps to fill in.
Definitely glad I've been away from here.
I have 7 days to finish a film that really needs 2+ weeks.
Wish me luck.
POISON - Teaser (dir. Christopher Jayawardena)
This is modified from the one I posted a while back. It's cleaner, shows less of the good stuff (but still teases at it really nicely), and makes it clearer who some of the key players in the story are. :D Enjoy, but be warned it has some flashy-flash stuff in it.
Actual teaser is up for next Downcast short! Be warned it's got some flashy imagery, so those with probs of fast-cuts and muzzle flashes should be cautioned! The film's edit is real close. Gotta do the big fire gag and end title sequence, then... Score it. (Meep!)
