Exhibition: Threshold Projects (2025)
Making quilts out of everyday household items is something that is common across quilting traditions, being a simple and cheap way to make something to keep warm- re-purposing fabric we already have, such as old pillow cases, bedsheets, towels, clothes etc.
This patchwork piece is made purely with offcuts from older sewing projects and also some found fabrics, including hemmed jeans and an aesop carry bag.
It's inspired by Korean Pojagi - traditional gift wrapping cloths - which uses encased seams, also known as a 'flat-felled'. This is the most exquisite seam due to its tidiness and use-ability on each side. There is no "wrong" or "back" side. Each side and each direction is beautiful!
This piece was for Threshold Projects group exhibition last year, which I was gratefully invited by Connor to participate in.
I wanted to make something precious out of throwaway scraps. Something that I could cherish indeed.
I also wanted to practice simplicity and restraint, not reaching for a dazzling new idea but rather seeing the gorgeous potential of what already is.
"Together we can be transformed to be united and repurposed to work and keep us a harmonious collective through the concept of faith and the circulatory of generosity and the human spirit."
All the reflections at the end of the video are so relevant and meaningful, and beautifully connects the art of pojagi to the human experience as a collective.
i made paper then made a pojagi-inspired quilt from it. a win for textile-influenced paper enthusiasts
