“here,” green stops pacing around the lab to shove a clipboard in rusty’s arms, before turning and digging through another cabinet full of files and papers, scrunching up his face as he skims through all of them. 

the clipboard in question has a list of all the pokemon under his care, and is a good 20 pages or so thick - with hundreds of names under each page. finally, his eyes light up when he sees what he wants to see, and he power-walks across the first floor to pry a pokeball out of a slot in the wall where it was warming up.

when he turns back to rusty, he offers a small smile, even if it’s a bit strained.

“the pokemon i’m giving you requires a bit of work, but most pokemon do - so if you care for him, he’ll change you as a person in return.” which was his hope. 

letting the pokemon out of his pokeball, a machop appears, stretching before looking up at his new trainer, waving happily with a grin spread across his face.

“machop are friendly, loyal, and steadfast.” he knelt down to pat the machop’s cheek with a more genuine smile, earning an affectionate rumble from the pokemon. “they’re very self-sufficient and love helping out their trainers with hard work, but they require proper nutrition, proper exercise, and lots of food.” 

standing back up, green takes machop’s hand gently, peering back up at rusty.

“i’ll be giving you instructions on how to care and train for him, and i’ll provide you with some parks that offer the kind of exercise machop will need. you’ll probably find yourself buying food more often, but, if you take care of him properly, you’ll be met with one of the strongest pokemon that will care for you in return.” 

suddenly, however, he turns serious, pointing a finger accusingly at the younger trainer.

“i’m trusting you here, okay? i know he can take care of himself and will defend himself if you mistreat him, but this is a chance for you to properly grow as a trainer.” his tone going cold, he juts his finger into rusty’s chest. 

“don’t squander it.”

he purses his lips, paces back and forth impatiently, and fumbles with the pokeballs in both hands. he’s debating - debating intensely with himself, it seems, on which one he should settle on, when she arrives. he knew right away there were two whole choices he wanted to go with here - so why was it so hard to pick? most likely because they weren’t meant to be separated.

“see, here’s the deal.” he starts off slowly, looking her over with a sharp eye, as if it’ll help him finally make up his mind. “there’s two pokemon i can’t decide on here. they both need a place to go, and you strike me as someone who will help them the whole way, and receive their help in return. that kind of bond is important with pokemon. so this is an important decision, based purely on chemistry, rather than on fighting techniques. i know you have a solid team, and what with your status as a trainer, i very much doubt you couldn’t get any pokemon you want through merely looking for it.”

he pauses, gives her a serious look. “these two pokemon are special based not on their being, but on their partnership. you gotta promise me you’ll give them a home they don’t have to be afraid of.” his eyes soften considerably. “but i don’t think i could separate them even if i wanted to. which..i don’t.”

“..so i won’t.”

slowly, he calls the pokemon out of their pokeballs. out of it appears a pair of pokemon clinging to each other - a shiny plusle and a shiny minun. 

the two of them hold each other like if they let go they’ll be separated again, and green pats them both on the head and waves, receiving small noises of acknowledgment. while he’s leaned over, he peers up at hilda, voice quiet, as if not to startle them.

“they had a trainer that wasn’t...the best.” he whispers, pauses to look down at them, then continues. “but they love. they love dearly, and intensely, and will always be there for a trainer, to cheer on and to encourage them. it’s their role in their environment, but it’s also the only thing they have besides each other.”

green shakes his head. “maybe you might not need them, but..i have a feeling they’d need you.” he’s more than aware of the work she’s done, someone who works so hard to defend and love pokemon is someone who will always be a good person, in his book. as someone who aspired to be a pokemon professor and hadn’t learned truly what it meant to be family until he was forced to swallow it, there’s nothing if not pride in the way he entrusts her with something that would feel too much for your average trainer.

“take good care of them, okay? they’ll always try their best for you, as long as you try too.”

a soft but friendly smirk, a twinkle in his eyes. having been to kalos on his own to study, he knows the sparkling champion when he sees her - and he’s surprised she wants a pokemon from him, but it doesn’t stop him from considering the options he has at hand, nonetheless.

“can’t say i have anything that will be befitting of a diamond like yourself, miss.” a tease, he means nothing by it, after all, but he does gain a considerate look - thinking, gears turning, it’s almost like the light bulb on top his head is alight for everyone to see merely seconds later.

“unless….”

suddenly, he’s glancing at labels on pokeballs and crouching down at a display a few feet away.

“you know your team’s super weak to ice, right? a lot of your pokemon are,” he continues, plucking a few pokeballs from the cabinets until he’s read them all thoroughly and placed them away. “a lot of weaknesses to steel and fairy, too. i think you have like, what was it, three or two steel types around, right? makes sense to have alternatives, you’re champion. but anyway, i have an idea.”

letting out a pokemon from behind a bookcase, he coos at it gently, ushering it over, to which it shyly declines a few times, before finally straddling over - an alolan sandshrew peeks out quietly at her with a small whimper, and green picks it up gently in his arms, careful with it, as if holding a crystal rose.

“he doesn’t have a name yet.” his voice has an almost unreadable tone to it, but a fondness still lingering behind it. “he’s a little shy, but very loyal, and not only does he add a much-needed facet to your team, but if you train him correctly, he’s got a lot of love to give.” the sandshrew nearly purrs as it nuzzles into green’s neck, and he stands up fully to hand him gently to her, in her arms.

“’course, not all pokemon and not all trainers are meant to go together. but,” green offers a thumbs up, before handing over the pokeball. “i think you two will make a great team ‘long as you keep in mind each other’s needs.”

he has to think hard. after all, he wants a pokemon that fits everyone - and while he might not know everything about everyone at first glance, he still wants something that fits each of the people he comes across.

a pokemon partner, after all, is more than just a tool. someone who will be there for you...

his eyes seem to brighten considerably as he holds up a finger, before hurrying towards the back of the room to the pokeballs placed carefully in slots. 

“i know just the pokemon! gimme a hot second, i’ll find ‘em for you!”

it doesn’t take that long, digging up just the pokeball he’s looking for, a small greatball with a heart sticker on it. as he approaches the young lady once more, a smile on his lips. he lets the pokemon out of the pokeball, to reveal bright pinks in a familiar, circular shape.

“a chansey.” he clarifies. it’s true, that’s exactly who he’d sought out. “i’m not gonna pretend to psycho-analyze you like some creep. you seem really sweet, but kinda sad. and pokemon aren’t exclusively for fighting, this one sure isn’t.”

hopping over to him, he crouches down to pet her gently, receiving a happy coo in response.

“her name’s seych. she used to belong to my sister, but daisy handed her off to me when she realized seych wanted to bring happiness to other people, and daisy already felt so happy. pokemon, they’re -- they’re family. and seych really needs someone to look after and protect, and while i can’t say you’re someone who looks like she needs protection, you certainly look like someone who could use that kind of support in your life. even if she helps you get just a little more happiness, it’ll make her day.” his voice is quieter now, taking on that wistful tone it often takes on these days.

letting seych back into her pokeball, he passes it to hikari with a sad smile.

“take good care of her, she’ll take good care of you, okay?”
