I wanted to go photograph rapids, so early in the morning I opened a map and searched for a location that was not too far from where I live. I found a place called Alikoski in Porvoo, which seemed like good location for some photography. I only took a quick look at the map, so I had no idea what else I would find other than a river and some rapids. Well, it turned out there were remnants of some old buildings and structures all around the rapids. I wandered around trying to figure out what used to be there, what was now in shambles. I took a long exposure photograph of a small part of the rapids and an old stone structure in the background, still not knowing what I was looking at. All I knew was that the structure was most likely built in the 1890's. There was no way I could cross the river from there without getting wet, so I backtracked a bit and crossed the river using an abandoned looking railway bridge, that was a bit upstream but very close to the structures. I got to the structure in this photograph, and it started to look like a hydroelectric plant, because there was a chamber there that looked like it housed two turbines. There was not much else around that I could find that would tell me what the place actually was, so when I came home I started researching. Turns out there were two mills operating there in the 1890's, and the stone structures I saw were just a small part of them. There might have even been a hydroelectric plant there later, but I wasn't able to verify that. I also found out that further upstream there is supposed to be more remnants like this, old dams, old mills, power plants and so on. Definitely going to visit the other sites too. Here's a picture of the mills taken by John Granlund back in the day. Explored 20.06.2018https://flic.kr/p/26YEN6g
