Polish Fest
I am actually fake 1/4 Polish. My father and his siblings believed they were Polish for a long time, because they were raised in a Polish neighborhood of suburban Detroit. Though they were really German, my grandparents pretended to be Polish because people were not big fans of Germans back then. So, I grew up having pierogies at my family Christmas! And here we are now...my very first Milwaukee festival...Polish Fest!!
Some friends and I went to Polish Fest on opening night, Friday June 15. After a long walk from our East Side meeting place, we arrived ready for some food (which is all I'm ever ready for!). We walked around for a while checking menus, looking for the perfect meal. We decided on this place...
which I now consider a great decision. So, as usual, I could not decide what to get, so of course I pretty much got one of everything. I had a dinner plate that included a Polish sausage sandwich with sauerkraut and peppers, a potato pancake, and Polish noodles (which I had never had before).
Thats a horrible picture sorry! I also got two cheese pieorgies on the side (of course!)
I downed all of this food in about 10 minutes, which my friends were pretty impressed by, seeing as I'm fairly...let's say...petite.
Anyway, then, we walked around the marketplace, and these were some of my favorite things...
According to my googling this is called Boleslawiec Pottery, which is named for the city of Boleslawiec, Poland. Apparently this style of pottery is pretty popular around Eastern Europe. I definitely had my eye on those mugs...so cute!!
There was also a polka stage with traditional music and dancing, but I didn't really get a chance to check it out. One of my friends did get the honey flavored alcoholic beverage, which I think was Krupnik, but I'm not sure. It had a cinnamon stick in it, and it tasted like sweet brandy. It was strong, but not bad. They also had a Polish beer on tap. So, that's it for my first MKE festival!! My Polish experiences before had consisted only of pierogies, and I'm glad I got to expand on that a little, even if only for a couple hours :)
