It is with the deepest sadness that we share the passing of Eugene. Chickens are incredibly stoic and we didn’t know anything was wrong until he was gone. In the past he has suffered from intestinal/vent blockages and we have unblocked him several times by soaking him in water and manually removing the waste from his vent. This summer he got a minor case of fly strike due to this ongoing issue and we were able to treat him until he recovered. Last night at bedtime we found him gone with another blockage that we didn’t detect in time. We are devastated and feel particularly awful as we didn’t even realize he was struggling. Yes, running a sanctuary is fun. But it is also hard. So so hard. Hard to care for animals that can’t tell you when they’re feeling sick, hard to deal with our own failures, oversights, and mistakes. Hard work o experience loss so often. But even so, it is always worth it. We’re so sorry Eugene. You were the coolest.
