geeking out about genshin's a finale emberforged's mexican cultural references (from a mexican's perspective) 🇲🇽🐲

spoilers for the volcano world quest! there's so much stuff I want to talk about, here's the history class no one asked for!

there's so much I want to tackle but the main things that got me going "AAAAAAAA" were the names! we have a couple of these

Xiuhcoátl

Kukulkán

Huitzilopochtli

Tollan

Tonatiuh

Starting with the Pyro Dragon himself, we have Xiuhcoátl

Xiuhcoátl in the myths is a legendary weapon, the Serpent of Fire, that the god Huitzilopochtli wielded in battle.

In Genshin, Xiuhcoátl as I've said is the Pyro Dragon Sovereign and, unlike the legend, he created the contingency plan named Huitzilopochtli!

Kukulkán/Kukulcán

We formerly knew him Waxaklahun Ubah Kan, which is the name Kukulcán went by during the Mayan Classic Period.

This part in particular has me biting my arm because I've wanted Quetzalcóatl in Genshin since 2021. Kukulcán and Quetzalcóatl are the same deities, just different names due to different legends and groups

Kukulcán (Yucatec) - Quetzalcóatl (Aztec)

Kukulcán/Quetzalcóatl is one of the most known Mexican deities, known as the Feathered Serpent. I have friends with Quetzalcóatl tattooed.

Kukulcán's temple is located in Chichén Itzá, which is still standing in Mexico and allowed to visit (: you can see Kukulcán sliding down the monument

Huitzilopochtli

Huitzilopochtli is also a very well known deity in México, deeply linked with the sun and one of Quetzalcóatl's siblings, known for ordering the foundation of Tenochtitlán, which would later become Mexico's City.

As said before, Huitzilopochtli wielded Xiuhcoátl as his living weapon.

In-game, Huitzilopochtli is an apocalyptic contingency plan created by Xiuhcoátl to defeat the Abyss and make the dragonborn thrive as one.

Tollan

Tollan is fun because it's actually Quetzalcóatl's sacred city in the legends, whereas in Genshin it's the sacred city where Xiuhcoátl created Huitzilopochtli.

After being deceived and humiliated by his brother Tezcatlipoca, Quetzalcóatl essentially exiled himself from his own city.

Tollan was known as a peaceful and bountiful city, but by the XII century the mexicas took over it and burned it to the ground :(

Tonatiuh

GOD, Tonatiuh -

Tonatiuh is the fifth and the present-day Aztec sun and, therefore, a sun god! Aztecs believed Tonatiuh to be able to be the supreme governor of the skies and be able to fight against the darkness every night.

Almost every Aztec sun symbol you see is very, VERY likely a depiction of Tonatiuh himself.

In game, Tonatiuh was also a heavenly city where (in-game) Kukulcán wished to see what was beyond the firmament!

AAAAAAAAAAA there's so much more stuff I want to tackle but there's only so much I can type on a Tumblr post and its not nearly enough to make another video on Genshin's mexican references, ANYWAY i love seeing my culture in this silly gacha game, for better or for worse, its so fuuuuun!!
