Ruby: So, about the Vytal Festival…

Blake, closing their book, having already picked up on Ruby’s nervous pacing: What about it?

Ruby: I was thinking, you know how if a team wins in the first round, they send two members to the next round?

Weiss, looking over her shoulder from her desk: Isn’t that a decision we should save for after we’ve actually won in the first round?

Yang: What do ya mean, Weiss? Of course we’re winning in the first round. I don’t know which two of us should be in the doubles round, but the four of us together are unstoppable! No way are we losing.

Ruby: And that’s exactly why I’m worried!

Yang: Hm?

Ruby: We’re so used to fighting as a team, like…I know we have our doubles attacks, but…I’m worried about choosing two of us when a different combo might be better?

Blake: You might be overthinking it a little. I think any two of us would be a great duo to enter the next round.

Ruby: Either way, we should decide now.

Weiss, sighing and spinning her chair around to face her team/partners: Well, in my opinion, based on how 2v2 fights can go, I think we should have a duo that works best as individual fighters as well as in a tandem support role. I believe Blake and I are perfect for that.

Yang: Woah woah woah, hold on. You want strong individual fighters who also work great together? That’s me and Ruby! We’ve been fighting along side each other for years and years.

Blake, chuckling: Along side each other, and fighting with each other.

Ruby: Yang, hold on. I don’t think I want to move into the next round if we win. It feels, I don’t know, inappropriate for me as the leader to do that? I should prioritize the team’s success above all else.

Blake, raising a hand: Also, we should keep in mind that if we win in the doubles round, only one of those two move onto the singles portion. So we should probably decide which of us is our pick to fight solo for our team, then work backwards from there.

Weiss: That’s a very good idea, Blake. I propose we put it to a vote, then. Which one of us is the best individual fighter?

Blake, raising their hand again: Yang.

Ruby: Yeah, Yang.

Yang, rubbing the back of her neck: Uhm…who were you gonna to vote for, Weiss?

Weiss, face red: I… Yang it is! So who should be her partner in doubles? I think since I’m such a specialist at support, I think I—

Ruby: Blake is pretty good at support, with their semblance and their ranged attacks.

Weiss: *splutters and falls silent*

Blake, chuckling: How about another vote? Since Ruby doesn’t want to be in the doubles round, should it be me or Weiss?

Weiss, stammering quickly: I have ranged attacks, too!

Ruby: I guess I vote for Blake?

Weiss, under her breath: Oh, I am definitely only putting four sugars in your coffee later…

Yang: Uhm…I’ll be honest, I think Blake and I would work best as a duo against Grimm, not other hunters. Unless it were, like, 2v1 I guess? Our offense works best when we’re both focused on a single opponent.

Blake, shrugging: Okay, that’s a good point actually. I think Yang’s vote counts twice since it’s her partner we’re trying to choose.

Weiss: Wait, so we’re picking me?

Blake: I’m cool with that.

Weiss, hopping out of her chair: Yes!

Yang, snickering: You got something to prove, ice queen? You seemed pretty desperate.

Weiss: I’m not desperate! I just…I feel my skills could serve our team well in our pursuit of a Vytal Festival victory. I mean, I know all of our names would end up on the trophy if Yang wins the finals. I just… *shoulders sink a bit* I guess I just wanted a chance to prove myself on my own. I haven’t really gotten that chance yet…

Yang, coming closer and putting a hand on her shoulder: Hey, I get it. But you gotta remember, we’re a team above all else. We gotta have each other’s backs and do what’s best for the team. Plus, I just really wanna be a tournament champion!

Weiss, frowning and shoving her with no real aggression: You’re accusing me of having something to prove?

Yang: Uhh, I promised my dad when I was seven that I was gonna win the Vytal Tournament someday.

Ruby: Oh yeah, I was there.

Yang: See? Ruby witnessed the solemn vow, it’s basically legally binding. I gotta do this or my dad can sue, and Zwei has never lost a court case.

Weiss: But—

Blake: You heard her, it’s the law, Weiss.

Weiss: It’s not… Ughhh…

Ruby: There’s gonna be another tournament in two years, Weiss. Maybe that could be the year you go on the singles push?

Weiss, considering that: You think so?

Ruby: Sure!

Yang: Maybe you’ll actually have some muscle mass by then, too!

Weiss: You’re taking advantage of the fact I’m unarmed right now, aren’t you?

Yang, giggling: I’m just teasing you, Weiss. *kisses her forehead* And, I mean, this isn’t a complete guarantee you won’t be in the singles round. You’ll be first backup, in case I break a leg or something.

Weiss, wincing: I feel like you’re jinxing yourself.

Yang, rolling her eyes: Besides, it’s not like I’m actually going to win. Pyrrha is in this tournament.

Ruby: Yeah…

Blake: Silver medals are cool.

Weiss: Okay, you’re right, I can’t beat Pyrrha.

Yang: Neither can I. But man, I’m gonna enjoy trying.

Blake, nodding: I’m going to enjoy watching.

Weiss: *thinks about it, then blushes* Hmph.

Ruby: You guys are weird.

They’ve known all their lives that they were platonic soulmates, seeing as they are sisters. They were raised by a polyamorous soulmate polycule with twin platonic soulmates, so they’ve been prepared all their lives

Weiss

Not only did she and Ruby get off on the wrong foot, but she and Blake had a falling out after learning Blake was a Faunus. However, love came easily once she tried to push herself to accept her soulmates.

Blake

Blake wasn’t looking for a relationship, even though she knew that she had found her soulmates, so she shut herself away from her soulmates until they accepted her as a Faunus.

[Jacques Schnee turns to face Weiss, who is barreling towards him,flanked by their faunus servant staff]

Jacques - What do you think you're doing ?!

Weiss- We're not leaving until you pay these people a fair wage

Blake- [staring at the baker with big blue eyes] COuld I have ....several dozen batches of cookies please

Baker- For like a party ?

Baker - I don't know...

Blake - Please [lip quiver] It would be real crumby day if I didnt get any

Baker- Did you....nevermind, hold on

Blake- Thats a sweet attitude youve got there

Qrow - Uhhh fire...

[Yang ignores him]

Qrow - Firecracker come on, thats rude

Yang- [looks up] So is interrupting someone when they're reading]

Qrow- [growls] Fine....but why are you and the pipsqueak acting so weird

Ruby - Perish the thought Uncle, I'm simply preparing to be the most revered huntress at Beacon Academy

Qrow- Ruby, i know you've never met the Schnee's but never talk like one aga....

Polyamorous Negotiations

Ruby wasn’t exactly jealous. No, that definitely wasn’t the word. When she saw the rest of her team together, Weiss, Blake and Yang all walking hand-in-hand, or cuddling together on Blake’s bed, it brought Ruby joy. No, she wasn’t jealous of any of her teammates. But sometimes she found herself wishing she could just take Blake’s or Weiss’ hand as they walked, or join their cuddle piles. She desired that closeness, the warm touch of her friends...

She wasn’t jealous, she was yearning. That was definitely the right word for it.

But what did those desires even mean? If Ruby was certain of anything, she didn’t like like Blake or Weiss. She didn’t like like anybody. She loved Blake and Weiss with all of her heart, but if she considered fantasies of dating them, being their girlfriend, sharing passionate kisses...it didn’t feel right. It didn’t feel wrong, either, just...unnecessary. Whatever these feelings of hers were, they didn’t require that kind of reciprocation.

Sometimes she just wanted them to hold her, to run up and hug them without worrying about how often she did so, and maybe a kiss here and there wouldn’t be so bad either. In fact, the idea of Blake or Weiss kissing her made her heart flutter. A closed mouth kiss, of course. Anything more than that moved too far into said “unnecessary” territory, and beyond that was a very well-defined “nope” category. But Weiss, Blake and Yang were a thing. They were a closed polycule, and even if they might be open to whatever Ruby was thinking, Ruby doubted she’d ever have the nerve to bring it up to them, or the ability to put it all into words.

That is, until one evening in the RWBY dorm, Ruby’s ever vigilant sister seemed to picked up on those very nerves that she was so bad at trying to hide.

“What’s up, sis?” She asked her. Yang had been taking down some notes in a journal while reading a textbook up in her bunk (Yang feeling the need to study for something was a rare sight).

Meanwhile on Ruby’s bunk, the team leader had been staring into space rather than doing her own homework. While Ruby didn’t get high grades like Yang’s, she was usually a diligent study (when she could stay awake). “Huh?” Ruby asked, blinking out of her daydream and looking over at her sister.

“You okay? You’re been zoned out for a while.” Yang sat with her back against the headboard, journal propped against her knees. “Something on your mind?” She asked like she knew there was an answer.

Ruby considered just saying it, confessing to having feelings towards Blake and Weiss, yet not knowing what those feelings even meant or what she wanted to do about them. Was there even a point to all of this worrying? Ruby was happy with being friends with them, she knew she didn’t need anything more than that. The occasional yearning was survivable. But…

“Yang, how did you figure out you liked Blake and Weiss?”

Yang seemed surprised by the question at first, but soon began to think about it. She set her journal aside and rested her elbows on her knees, wobbling her socked feet up and down as she considered. “Well, I just started to develop feelings for them, kinda slowly I guess. After we all got to know each other better, I started to really enjoy being around them. And then I started crushing on them both, had a bit of a crisis because of that, then I worked up the courage to talk to Blake about how I felt. She felt the same about me, and Weiss, and was supportive of the polyamory idea. Honestly, establishing that with her, that understanding, it made me love her even more. And after we both talked to Weiss and she got on board, I felt that way about her, too.”

Ruby nodded, listening to her sister and trying to decipher what her recounting might mean for her own feelings. She definitely wouldn’t describe her feelings as a crush. But when Yang mentioned feeling like she loved Blake even more after learning she felt the same…maybe there might be something there?

“What makes you ask?” Yang said.

Ruby looked over at her and felt her face heat up. She knew Yang could probably see her blushing even from across the room. “I was just…” She took a deep breath. All of a sudden, just coming out and admitting it felt like the right thing to do. She could tell Yang anything, after all. “I think I have…some kind of feelings for Weiss and Blake.” She let that linger and looked over at Yang, her expression hard to read from so far, but she definitely had her attention. “Only, I don’t know what those feelings are. Like, I don’t think I like them in the way you do. I don’t want to date them, but I… I think I want to be something other than just friends with them. Like…friends, but the kind of friends who can hug and cuddle and kiss each other but it not be weird or…” She halted her rambling and hid her face with her hands. “Gods, I probably sound so weird, talking about your girlfriends like this.”

“Hey, hey, don’t worry,” Yang said, sounding genuine in her attempt to comfort her. “You can’t just choose how you feel about people. Your feelings are valid, sis. But I guess I gotta ask… What kind of relationship do you want with Blake and Weiss? Like, a queerplatonic one?”

Ruby let her hands fall away from her face and she looked back over at Yang. “Queerplatonic?”

“It’s…pretty much exactly what it sounds like,” Yang began to explain, rotating herself to hang her legs off the side of her bed to face towards her. “You have deep feelings for someone, but those feelings aren’t sexual or romantic, they’re like friendly feelings, but…more? Like, a serious, committed platonic relationship between queer people.”

Like friends but more. That did sound right to her.

“And I mean…queerplatonic partners can totally hug and kiss and cuddle, stuff like that doesn’t have to be strictly romantic,” Yang added.

“And…you’d be okay with that?” Ruby asked. “Me kissing Blake, or Weiss? They’re your girlfriends, though…”

Yang shrugged. “It doesn’t feel like something that would bother me. In fact, I think it might be cute!”

Ruby couldn’t help but smile. At the very least, she had Yang’s support. That was something she tended to always be able to count on. “So, what should I do?”

“Uhm...tell them how you feel?”

Ruby stared blankly at Yang. “Come again?”

“Tell them you have queerplatonic feelings for them,” Yang said plainly with a shrug.

“How?” Ruby asked, “Do I do that??”

Yang let out a sigh, then hopped to the floor and walked over to Ruby’s bunk, leaning against the side of it and looking up to her sister. “Okay, Rubes. Let me tell you a thing or two about talking to girls.”

“Don’t act like you’re an expert at that, Miss ‘It goes great with your pajamas’!”

“Shushushush, you must know, it’s a very particular strategy,” Yang continued. “Step one: A quirky but inviting greeting. Like a hearty ‘howdy!’ Or you challenge them to a duel.”

“I will throw this book at you.”

“That also works!”
