May Daily Writing Challenge Day 4 - Doubt
The offer was still available, just hovering over his head like an annoying gnat. At some point very soon he would need to make a decision and give his answer. He thought by now he would know what to do, but even after speaking to Pollux, Cazmilan, and his military superiors, he was still confused as to which way to go.
Months ago, he had been asked by General Zer’vora himself to begin training in the Elite Forces once this campaign came to its conclusion. It was a huge leap for him to take, and even if he did there was no promise he would actually make it through the rigorous training process that would last two or more years.
Pollux had gone through it and explained the process, not in full detail, but enough to instill the fear of Light into him. Nothing was sugar-coated, and honestly it made him wonder why on Azeroth anyone would want to go through that. Yet, in the end Pollux loved it. He had bonded deeply with his fellow trainees, and it allowed him a much larger sense of purpose in the world. While Aerden didn’t always know exactly what Pollux was doing at any given moment, he knew he was on those front lines and was one of the soldiers that truly made a difference in the fate of the world.
It was a difficult thought to fathom that he too could be one of those people.
Could he though?
The self-doubt was always persistent, Aerden had never seen himself as all that important in the grand scheme of things. He was content to just do his part, follow orders, help others, save lives when able, and simply do the right thing.
Perhaps that was the very reason he had been chosen for this. He was humble despite his constantly growing skills, and he did save lives. Quite a few of them, in fact. He never complained about his postings, and was usually one of the first to volunteer for missions that might have seemed unworthy to others. After spending the first part of his life being made to feel worthless, he had always felt like he had more to prove than the others.
Maybe this is exactly what was meant for him. And if not, there was no harm in trying.
