Bucky couldn't help the nerves that continued to wash over his body when he was alone with you. It had always happened, and it didn't seem to matter how long you three had been together, he was always feeling nervous around you.
Nervous that his Vibranium arm might hurt you.
Nervous that he wouldn't be good enough for you.
Nervous that you might get hurt on his watch.
Nervous that you'd realize only Steve is enough, and he'd have to live without you.
Nervous that you'd realize only he was enough, and he'd have to live without Steve.
Nervous over every single thing because in his eyes you were nothing short of a goddamn goddess.
Everything that you had ever done to him, for him, or said to him, made his heart rate increase and palms sweaty, which also made him nervous seeing as he was supposed to be one of the most terrifying men in town.
But for fuck's sake, you were perfect.
"Steve, wait," Bucky muttered, grasping at Steve's arm to hold him back as the team of men in suits filed out of their office.
Steve turned to look at Bucky, seeing his nervous expression and closing the door behind the men so they could be alone. "Baby, what's wrong? It's going to be okay. I'll be back home tomorrow morning."
Bucky nodded softly, teeth gnawing on the inside of his lip as he leaned against his desk. "I know, but, what if I--," he replied meekly, not even able to say the things his brain was impulsively thinking of.
Steve stopped him, raising his hand to the man as he shook his head. "Bucky, no. Listen, that's not who you are anymore; it never was. You can't be controlled anymore, baby, and that thing is nothing more than a fancy prosthetic," he said adamantly, eyes flickering between Bucky's.
"Yeah, but--," He tried again, eyes focused on the black and gold arm attached to him before being cut off by Steve's incessant 'no.'
Steve sighed, slotting himself between Bucky's legs as he wrapped his arms around the man's neck, pulling his attention towards him as he left loving kisses on his cheek.
Steve has always known about his fears and nerves. He has spent every day reminding Bucky how absurd they were, but it didn't matter how many times Steve told him that he wouldn't even hurt you in his sleep or you told them how much you loved them and was happy to be with them both, he still felt nervous.
"Buck, you're not going to hurt her. You love her, and she loves you, Bucky. She's going to love getting alone time with you. It's been 8 months and you two haven't been alone longer than a couple hours-- don't think she hasn't noticed that," Steve said, pecking the man on the nose before pulling away and holding his hands.
Bucky took a deep breath, nodding as he knew he was right; Steve was always right. "You're right, love you. Be careful," he stated, standing with the man to kiss him goodbye.
----
Water splashed against your face as you washed the suds down the drain before blindly reaching for a towel to dry the skin.
Steve had gone off for the night for some meeting and left you and Bucky alone for the first time in your entire 8 month relationship, and you were so exited when Steve told you. You love Bucky and you knew he loved you, but he always acted like something was off when it was just the two of you.
You knew that both men had pasts that they didn't like to discuss, both did things they weren't entirely proud of. They would rather discuss the happenings in the mafia world than the world before you, which told you that it must be incredibly hard for them to discuss.
And you respected that.
Of course you knew their past being super soldiers, but never did they talk about those years in their lives.
You had been given no reason to be suspicious or not trusting with the boys, especially when they so freely told you about their 'real jobs,' so you always felt like there was no need to pry...
This also meant that you had never talked to Bucky about his prosthetic or how and why he obtained it, but what you did know is that he hated it and the scars that adorned the top of his shoulder around the arm.
You sighed softly as you stared at yourself in the bathroom mirror, using the reflection to watch Bucky read in bed.
He's leaned against the headboard, hands occupied by a book that holds his full attention. He's breathing softly and occasionally releases a soft smile at the book, and your heart melts at the town's scariest man being so utterly relaxed in your bed.
Silently, you left the bathroom, walking right over to the bed and straddling Bucky's lap. He peeks at you over his book momentarily before smiling as he pretends to return to reading. "Can I help you, doll?"
You smile down at him as she acts like he's paying no attention to you, and take the time to let your fingers trail up his arm. The cool metal under your fingers brings a hum to your lips, but makes Bucky peer at you over the pages again.
His arm jerks away from you instinctively, and your eyes meet his before trailing your fingers over it once more. "You know that I love you, right, James?" You mutter barely above a whisper, as your fingers make their way to his shoulder.
He takes a deep breath, closing the book at the use of his government name. Anytime he hears it outside of the office, he knows it is to be taken seriously. "Doll," he whispers, almost as a warning, but you ignore it.
You lean closer to him, bringing your lips to the raised scars on his arm softly, peppering kisses along them as he holds his breath, tears collecting in his eyes. "I love all of you, James. You know that, right?"
You straighten up, palms finding Bucky's cheeks as he nods, tears falling slowly down his skin. You stay silent for a moment, thumbs wiping away his tears as you continue peppering him with love and kisses. After a few, he takes a deep breath, wrapping his hands in yours as he hesitates to speak. "Doll, I'm the Winter Soldier," his voice breaks as he says it, along with your heart.
This was the first time those words had ever been said in the house-- the first time you'd ever heard the name used outside of the media portrayal of him.
You could see the pain in his eyes when he thought it, could hear the pain in his voice as he said it. Tears were now masking your field of vision as you sat straddling him, holding his hands.
You took a deep breath and shook your head, pulling his eyes to yours with a finger under his chin. "No, you're not. You're James Buchanan Barnes," you stated, kissing his cheek before adding in a whisper, "You're my Bucky."
The words brought a smile to his face and a light laugh, which brought your grin back to your face. "You'd never hurt me, Bucky," you added with a shrug, as if it were common sense-- a no brainer that you couldn't cause harm to the people you loved most in the world.
He sighs deeply, a sigh of relief, as the words finally click with him. He was finally able to hear the words without doubting himself, and it made the nerves wash right away.
All of the nerves he had been harboring for months, now washed away with your carefree, nonchalant shrug and "no-duh" response.
Laying the book on the table beside him, he turned the lamp off before using both hands to pull your lips to his. "Let's go to sleep, Doll," he whispered against your lips.
You nodded in agreement before sliding into bed beside him, curling up beside him as he enveloped you in both of his arms. "I love you, Doll. So much," were the last words you heard as you drifted to sleep while Bucky laid awake stroking your hair.
Morning came and the both of you laid in the same position. Steve returned home from his trip, silently making his way to the bedroom to see you two laid together in one another's arms and smiled as he laughed softly. "Told you so, you fucking worry wart," he mumbled before sliding in bed behind you to catch up on missed sleep.
